The former head of the Iraqi Sunni Endowment Office, Abdul Latif Al-Hamim, praised the role of President Masoud Barzani in Iraq, and pointed out that the country is not considered a “producer” of extremism, but other countries are doing so. He also stressed the need to unify religious endowments in one ministry.
Al-Humaim said in an interview with Kurdistan 24, on the sidelines of the Al-Rafidain Forum, which was held in Baghdad, that Iraq includes "wise leaders who are able to convince social actors, and they are many, led by President Massoud Barzani, and the (late) President Jalal Talabani used to play this role."
He pointed to the presence of "wise Shiite and Sunni leaders," and added, "There are symbols among the Sunnis who are able to play a major role, in either a surgical operation, to eradicate the malignant tumor and restore the political process again and revive it again, or go to a new political contract in which we agree on Principles and rules consistent with preserving… the privacy of all components in Iraq.”
Al-Humaim went on to say, "There are real actors at the level of Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, and Erbil is capable of playing a major role, and (the leader of the Sadrist movement Muqtada) al-Sadr and (head of the State of Law coalition Nuri al-Maliki) are also able to play a major role.
When asked about the role of the Sunni and Shiite endowments in Iraq, Al-Humaim added, “The role of the bureaus did not turn into an institution, and the Sunni Endowment could not play its role or get out from under the mantle of Sunni political strife, and this did not happen with the Shiite endowment, because the religious authority in Najaf is that plays a political role.
He continued, "If we do not succeed in forming the Ministry of Endowments, it is better to have a ministry in the name of religious affairs, which handles the affairs of all religions in Iraq, because we need a unified religious discourse that believes in moderation and moderation, that distances itself from extremism and blasphemy, and formulates a new enlightening and awareness discourse."
Regarding religious extremism and takfir, Al-Humaim indicated that “Iraq is not a producer of extremism or terrorism, but rather a consumer of them after 2003,” considering that “Afghanistan and many Arab countries are producers of takfiri ideology and extremism, such as Jordan, Egypt and Syria at some stage.”
Regarding the ties that bind Kurdish and Arab Qabbalah to each other, Al-Humaim said that “strong and good relations between the Arab and Kurdish clans, especially before 2003, but weakened after that, but I do not know what the reasons are. The relations were strong, especially during the sixties.”
Al-Humaim was asked about the Iranian bombing of the Kurdistan Region, and he said, “When you do not have the tools, they will become permissible by all neighboring countries, not only by Turkey and Iran… There must be a central state that is strong and able to deter at any moment.”
The former head of the Sunni Endowment attributed the continued violation of Iraq’s sovereignty to “the weakness of the current political system, which has many structural and structural imbalances, and thus society is torn apart and there is no strong ruling authority capable of implementing the law and making its decisions in Baghdad.”
Al-Humaim expressed his belief that the protests against the bombing operations or the invitation of the ambassadors of the aggressor countries will not work, and called for “a reconsideration of the agreements concluded in times of weakness of the Iraqi state, such as the agreement concluded with Turkey, and the agreements with Iran even if they were not written.”
He added, "We have a history and geography problem with Ankara and Tehran, and to address the situation, I think we must go to sit at a table and agree on common interests between Baghdad, Tehran and Ankara."
Al-Humaym said, “Iraq is alone, and neither the Arabs nor the Persians nor the Franks will benefit it, because most of them do not want Iraq to be strong, because when it is strong, it is the locomotive in the region, and therefore there are those who do not want Iraq to be the locomotive of the region, and there are those who appear to wish That, but from under the table harbors something else.”
Concerning mixing religion with politics, Al-Humaim said, “When politics is religious or religiosity politicizes, the two fail together, and in Iraq they both exist. In its upper part, and modest in its lower part.
Al-Humaim expressed his support for peaceful protests, saying that the future “carries hope for change,” and expressed his wishes that this change would be far from violence.
"If this change was based on violent tools, we would all go to the unknown, Kurdish Arab Shiites, Sunni Turkmen, we would all go to the unknown," he said.
