The Kurdistan Regional Government instructed the Erbil Provincial Council to take a package of service measures in the city and its suburbs, to prevent floods and torrential rains.
Last year, heavy rains caused floods and torrential rains in Erbil, causing human and material losses to citizens' properties.
The Kurdistan Regional Government made preparations five months ago, which included cleaning the Corniche Canal from its beginning to its end and removing all obstacles that penetrated it and caused previous floods.
As well as the construction of two sturdy bridges instead of barriers, and the implementation of a two-lane street at the end of the Rochenberry district in the district of Dartu, will be completed within days.
In the new Erbil neighborhood, irrigation directorate teams, through several companies, carried out campaigns to clean the canal, to eliminate any problems in the Corniche and remove the risk of flooding in the street.
The government’s measures also included building a new canal for the city of Hiran City and its surroundings, which was flooded last year, as it will direct water to the Bensalawa Dam and then to the Corniche, and 85% of the project has been completed.
As for Salah al-Din Resort Road, the Prime Minister of Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, instructed to clean the outskirts of a 150-meter road at a cost of 8 billion dinars.
In downtown Erbil, a clean-up campaign has been carried out in most of the tunnels, underpasses, water networks and bridges, and will be opened through the six municipalities and environmental directorates.
The government’s preparations also include establishing a water storage pond in the Dartu district, and later using it for agriculture and tourism purposes, according to what was published by the official website of the Kurdistan Regional Government.
