Shafaq News / The Kurdistan Importers and Exporters Union announced, on Saturday, the region's intention to increase fruits exported to countries abroad, while the Director of Dohuk Agriculture confirmed that farmers' apples and grapes will be exported abroad.

The head of the Kurdistan Exporters and Importers Union, Mustafa Abdul Rahman, told Shafaq News agency, "The region enjoys fertile and blessed soil, and the agricultural sector is one of the important sectors, as is the case in developed countries."
He added, "The region seeks to export surplus quantities of local production abroad, especially agricultural crops, although the last period witnessed the export of limited local agricultural crops, but now preparations are underway to export 1,500 kg of local pomegranates to Kuwait, Qatar, the Emirates and Britain."
Abdul Rahman expressed his happiness with "transforming the region from a consumer into a producer and exporter," adding, "We can export any other agricultural product after achieving internal sufficiency in it by taking care of it and developing it."
For his part, the Director of Dohuk Agriculture, Ahmed Jamil, said, "One of the KRG's plans is to find markets for local products for farmers, and now we are working with the Prime Minister's Office to export these products outside the country."
Jamil added, "In Dohuk Governorate, the apples of Barwari region are very famous, and a large area of land in the region has been converted into apple orchards, where they produce very good seasons, and work is now underway to export these apples outside the country."
Jamil pointed out that "efforts are underway to find markets for farmers' products, and work is underway to export apples and grapes outside the country, especially to the Gulf countries."
And the Minister of Agriculture in the Kurdistan Region, Bekard Talabani, had confirmed earlier that 2,500 tons of pomegranate fruit had been prepared for export abroad.
While the head of the regional government stressed that the Kurdistan Region can play an important role in providing food security in cooperation with the countries of the region, he also indicated that the export of pomegranates marks the beginning of the export of another group of crops in the Kurdistan Region, including apples, grapes and honey.
