The Patriotic Union bloc demands the transformation of the Kurdistan Region into four electoral districts
Shafaq News/ The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan demanded today, Wednesday, the necessity of amending the law of the Independent High Electoral and Referendum Commission in the region, and transforming Kurdistan into four electoral districts, with the need to update the voter register because there is a big difference between the voter register for 2018 and the last record according to which the recent Iraqi elections were conducted.
The head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan bloc in the Kurdistan Parliament, Ziyad Jabbar, said in a press conference held today that: the laws of the Commission and the elections need to be a national consensus on them, because according to the agreement that took place between the Patriotic Union and the Kurdistan Democratic Party before the formation of the Iraqi government, the amendment of laws that carry a dimension Nationally, there must be a national consensus on it.
He added: We stressed during our previous meetings that these laws must have a national consensus before going to the parliament session.
Jabbar also demanded that the Kurdistan region have four electoral districts instead of one with the update of the voter register for 2018, arguing that the current voter register includes many deficiencies, including many deaths that have not been deleted, and there is a significant difference between it and the voter register that was made according to it. On Tuesday, the Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc expressed its refusal to postpone the parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region beyond their scheduled date, and to extend the life of the current session of the region’s parliament, at the same time supporting the survival of the Independent High Commission for Elections and Referendum in the region until the polling process is conducted and the election results are announced.
On Thursday (February 24, 2022), the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, signed a regional order setting the first of next October as the date for holding the general elections of the Parliament of Kurdistan - Iraq.
The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, had directed at the end of last February to allocate a budget to hold parliamentary elections in the region on schedule.
However, Mona Qahwaji, a member of the Presidium of the Kurdistan Parliament, said in a statement to reporters that if the election law is amended, it cannot be held on time.
She added that the Independent High Electoral and Referendum Commission in the region no longer has any legitimacy, and is unable to perform its duties, so a new commission should be formed, taking into account the representation of its components.
