Today, Wednesday, the Ministry of Environment announced its procedures after considering Lake Sawa as a natural reserve by a decision of the Council of Ministers, while clarifying the mechanism used and criteria for declaring natural reserves.
The ministry's spokesman, Amir Ali Al-Hassoun, said, "Lake Sawa will have an integrated management of its water policy and will provide it with all the necessary requirements for the lake to be a natural reserve and an integrated tourist facility in the future."
He added, "The Ministry of Water Resources will provide Lake Sawa with water storage, and it will not be included in the water management that the ministry is working on, which will make the lake complete with the recognized specifications."
He pointed out that "the Ministry of Environment has drawn up a study for many facilities that have an environmental and tourism impact in order to enhance the status of the Iraqi environmental heritage."
He stated, "The problem of water shortage is one of the most important challenges that prevent the completion of projects, but in agreement with the concerned authorities such as the ministries of water resources, culture and agriculture, these studies are completed and approved by the Council of Ministers."
The Assistant Director General of the Environmental Awareness and Media Department at the Ministry, Anam Thabet Khalil, said: "The natural reserve is the place where the biodiversity of animals and plants is available, and there is what is called the natural habitat."
Khalil explained, "The natural reserve must meet certain standards, including that it is not reached by human hands and that no industrial or service activity or population gathering takes place on it, in addition to certain standards that are responsible for the national committee headed by the Minister of Environment, which includes several ministries, including water resources." and agriculture.”
He pointed out, "The procedures used to convert the place into an environmental reserve are for the governorate to submit a request to the Ministry of the Environment indicating the existence of a place in that applicant governorate, which is considered a natural habitat, and can be nominated as a natural reserve, after which it is legally approved to be surrounded by a fence and provide All special supplies, to be protected.
It is noteworthy that the Cabinet discussed, yesterday, Tuesday, the decision of the National Committee for Protected Natural Sites (3 of 2017), and approved declaring the site of Lake Sawa a natural reserve, due to its international standards and clear richness in biological diversity, in addition to geomorphological forms and its distinctive nature. Based on Article (4) of the Natural Reserves Law (2 of 2014).
It is noteworthy that Lake Sawa is a closed salty lake located in Al-Muthanna Governorate near the Euphrates River, 23 km west of the city of Samawah.
Lake Sawa does not have rivers flowing into it or leaving it, but it is supplied with groundwater from under the lake, which is filtered to it from the Euphrates River through cracks and fissures.
