    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Thursday, independent MP Haider Al-Mutairi revealed that more than 70 parliamentary signatures had been collected to withdraw a proposal to amend the local elections law.
"We strongly object to the amendments to the Provincial Council Elections Law," Al-Mutairi said in a press conference held in the House of Representatives, which was attended by (Baghdad Today), noting that it is "not consistent with the aspirations of the Iraqi people seeking change."
He explained that "the proposed provincial elections law enshrines the continuity and survival of power in the hands of one party over the other, and circumvents the votes of Iraqi voters."
He stressed that "the process of merging the elections of the House of Representatives with the provincial councils is not justified," noting that "the collection of more than 70 signatures of members of the House of Representatives to withdraw the proposal to amend the provincial elections law from the agenda."
On February 13, 2023, the House of Representatives completed the first reading of the draft law for the third amendment to the provincial and district council elections law.
