Iraq achieved self-sufficiency in cement, by producing more than 32.4 million tons last year, while the Ministry of Industry and Minerals confirmed that this achievement was achieved thanks to cooperation with the private sector, which accounted for 65% of the quantities produced.
The ministry praised the decision to reduce fuel prices for producing factories, and called on the government for more support for the production of this substance, which is an important national industry and a basic pillar for construction and reconstruction operations.
In order to provide a cover of protection for this industry, the Federation of Iraqi Industries urged the necessity of establishing new industrial projects for cement and protecting these industries from foreign products.
The Director General of the Technical Department in the Ministry of Industry, and the head of the Cement Association in Iraq, Eng. Nasser Al-Madani, stated during his interview with “Al-Sabah” that “the cement industry is the second largest national strategic and vital industry, and a basic pillar in the construction and reconstruction process, as Iraq is considered the first pioneer in the East.” Middle East in the establishment of this industry and the founder of the first company in this field in the thirties of the last century and the first factory in Baghdad during the forties of the last century as well.
Al-Madani pointed out that since then, Iraqi cement exports have reached some Arab Gulf countries and Turkey as a result of the availability of raw materials in abundance, in addition to the presence of fuel, energy, manpower and great experience, noting that Iraq was able to establish eighteen government factories and a large number of private sector factories and produce various types of cement. Others with international specifications, such as cement for oil wells and ultra-fine, quick-hardening cement, which is used for grouting dams and soil, and in the process of producing other types.
Al-Madani continued, “Before 2003, the cement industry was limited to government factories, and as a result of the increase in population and urban development, and the fact that most of the government factories are old, the private sector had a great impact on the development of this industry by establishing 10 integrated factories and three cement grinding factories, and its production became 65% of Iraq’s production.” Indicating that the success in providing this material without relying on the importer comes as a result of the concerted efforts of the public and private sectors in production in quantity and quality and with international specifications, stressing at the same time the determination to reach the design capacity of about 42 million tons annually. Industry, that "Iraq has achieved self-sufficiency in this material at reasonable prices and has prevented the import of foreign cement according to a decision issued by the Council of Ministers, and has mainly contributed to achieving production booms in recent years represented by the production of more than 32.4 million tons last year 2022, explaining the development of this industry through the rehabilitation of government laboratories in cooperation with the private sector as well as in the field of increasing production, reducing carbon emissions and preserving the environment by switching to dry gas instead of black oil in operating furnaces and adding systems to take advantage of wasted thermal energy In the production of electric energy, stressing that this industry succeeded despite the difficulties it went through as a result of the lack of support in the field of fuel and electric energy, as fuel prices were raised by the Ministry of Oil from 100 dinars to 350 dinars per liter in April 2021 until Prime Minister Muhammad Al-Sudani set the price at 150 dinars per liter in February 2023.
For his part, the head of the Iraqi Federation of Industries, Adel Akab, says, "The industrial sector is one of the main pillars of the Iraqi economy, including the pioneering cement industry, as it has front and back links with the rest of the production sectors in the country," stressing that the industrial companies collectively contributed to the operation of many Manpower in various specializations and professional levels, which helped create a specialized and trained national cadre.
Akab stressed the need to provide the necessary support for movement in the field of industrial investment, as the industrial sector development program is not limited to rehabilitating existing government factories, but also includes promoting the establishment of new industrial projects for the private sector, including the cement industry, and protecting these industries from foreign products.
