Today, Wednesday (April 19, 2023), the Federal Ministry of Electricity said that the connection with Turkey is 100 percent complete, pending the preparation of an appropriate pricing list for Iraq to enter into force and implement the final operating agreement.
The ministry’s spokesman, Ahmed Musa, said that “energy supply for all governorates is integrated after the Ministry of Electricity carried out large works that took advantage of the moderate temperature in the last period,” noting in a statement to the official agency, that “some areas are experiencing technical symptoms, but they are soon dealt with by Our angels.
Regarding the latest developments in the linkage operations with neighboring countries, Moussa explained, "The link with Turkey is 100 percent complete, and we are waiting for the preparation of an appropriate pricing list for Iraq to enter into force and implement the final operating agreement."
He continued, "Work is also underway regarding the connection with Jordan, and it is supposed to be completed and enter the first phase in early June with a capacity of 150 megawatts."
Regarding the Gulf link, Musa said, "The works are underway, including the construction of a line linking the Iraqi Al-Faw station with the Al-Wafra station in Kuwait."
And he indicated that "the recent visit of the Minister of Electricity to Riyadh on April 11 discussed the technical connection with Saudi Arabia, and we set a starting point to start this project."
And the Federal Minister of Electricity had confirmed in previous statements that “the ministry is serious about the process of electrical interconnection with neighboring countries, and is currently in the process of direct electricity interconnection with the Gulf countries, which will feed Iraq with up to 500 megawatts towards Basra Governorate.”
The country has been suffering from power outages for more than three decades, despite the huge sums that have been spent on the power generation sector since 2003 until today, estimated, according to experts, at more than $80 billion.
A report issued by the International Energy Agency in April 2019 indicated that Iraq's production capacity of electric power is about 32,000 megawatts, but it is unable to generate only half of it due to its inefficient transmission network.
The report adds that of the 16,000 megawatts produced by Iraq, about 40 percent is lost during distribution.
Iraq does not have the ability to produce enough electricity because of its dilapidated infrastructure, which makes it unable to achieve self-sufficiency to secure the needs of its population of more than 40 million people.
