On Sunday, the Ministry of Electricity revealed an upcoming visit of a delegation from the Gulf interconnection to Iraq to discuss a mechanism for completing the implementation of an energy agreement.
The ministry's spokesman, Ahmed Moussa, said, "The ministry had previously announced that the completion of the first phase of the Iraqi-Gulf energy link in the summer of 2022, which includes the transfer of 500 megawatts of power to Basra Governorate," according to "Ina".
He added, "After Iraq has completed 86% of its commitments, there will be a visit by the Gulf interconnection delegation to Iraq to discuss the mechanism for completing the implementation of the agreement to establish a line linking Al-Zour station with Al-Faw station, so that the agreement becomes mature in its first stage."
He pointed out that "the project will have a second and third phases for the development of interconnection projects, which are based on the exchange of benefit for energy and not on the basis of energy import."
Regarding the connection with Jordan, Moussa said: “The electrical connection with Jordan is based in its first phase on the construction of the Risha-Qaim line with 400 kV, and that the Al-Qaim transformer station will be established with 400 kV as well,” noting that “he will undertake the transfer of 150 megawatts to the governorates.” Al Gharbia and then develops to reach 960 megawatts."
He explained that "the project was referred to General Electric Company within a time limit of 26 months to establish and complete the first phase," noting that "the directives of the Undersecretary for Production Affairs accelerated the implementation of this agreement."
He cautioned that "the visit of the Jordanian Minister of Energy to Baghdad signed a mechanism for implementing this agreement in an accelerated manner, provided that the completion of the first phase would be about one year."
He stressed that "works are now underway. They are defining the paths of the lines and connection points, and then studying the supply of electricity to the western regions of Iraq."
