    Information / translation.
A report by the Hebrew newspaper The Times of Israel confirmed, Thursday, that the Israeli entity opposes Iraq's access to nuclear energy for the purpose of generating electricity and resolving the electricity crisis in the country.
The report, which was translated by Al-Maalouma Agency, quoted a tweet on behalf of the Iraqi government's military spokesman, Yahya Rasool, as saying, "The Iraqi government is seeking to develop a civilian nuclear program," as he stressed the holding of a high-level meeting on developing the peaceful program to diversify the energy sources of the oil-rich country.
The report added, "This may be a risky development nearly four decades after the Israeli raid that destroyed the French Osirak reactor in Baghdad," referring to the destruction of the Iraqi reactor in 1981.
"The reactor will be used to produce electricity, as the oil-rich country is looking to reduce its dependence on polluting fossil fuels," Rasoul said, adding that "the meeting discussed the initiation of building a nuclear reactor that is limited to peaceful purposes."
The report continued, "Iraq has been talking for years about trying to resume its nuclear program, but such discussions rarely rose beyond low-level talks under the pretext of instability and vociferous Israeli opposition to such a step without intense oversight." While Israel remains the only country in the The Middle East region that possesses nuclear weapons without global opposition to its intentions.
It is noteworthy that in 1981, Israel partially destroyed a reactor under construction in Osirak, south of Baghdad, which was being developed for peaceful purposes but was feared to be secretly intended to make a nuclear weapon, according to Israeli intentions. In 2003, American forces invaded the country based on information False intelligence that the country was hiding weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, which later turned out to be false.
