To fortify its sovereignty.. Iraq strengthens its defense capabilities with a French radar deal

Iraq seeks to increase its defense capabilities, as part of a series of contracts that would preserve national sovereignty from the repeated breaches that occur from time to time by the Turkish side or even the American occupation.
Within the policy of the current government led by Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani, strengthening military capabilities and developing security forces has special priorities, according to what was decreed in the government curriculum.
The government worked to diversify the sources of weapons instead of the policy of monopoly with which the United States of America dealt with Iraq, especially during the terrorist ISIS gang war, in which Iraq won with the blood of its people over the largest American terrorist project, with the available security capabilities in addition to the endless support from the Islamic Republic. Iranian.
During the past year 2022, Iraq contracted to purchase some long-range radars, which number five radars, whose visibility reaches about 50 kilometers, as they were distributed to some governorates of Iraq, including Anbar, Dawaniya, Mosul, as well as Basra, in addition to Kirkuk Governorate, in order to monitor the entry of any Plane to the Iraqi border and work to deter it.
In this context, a security source revealed today, Saturday, that Iraq had contracted a new set of radars with France.
According to the source who spoke to Al-Ahed News, “The Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani, agreed to contract with France to purchase 17 radars.”
According to the source, “the government will work to complete the contracting procedures for these low-range radars, meaning that it is specialized to detect low-lying aircraft, and not like the previous meal that Iraq contracted for last year, as the radars were long-range.”
This trend of the current government comes on the grounds that the existing defense systems and radars are of old systems, especially in light of the technological development taking place, whether in the manufacture of weapons or aircraft and all military equipment, and therefore the government wants to keep pace with this development by supplying the security system with these radars.
From time to time, Turkish planes target sites belonging to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, and this in itself is a flagrant encroachment on Iraq's sovereignty and a violation of its national security. Therefore, it has become imperative for the government to protect its borders and lands through contracts that would preserve Iraqi sovereignty.
In a previous tweet, His Eminence Sheikh Qais Khazali stressed on the Iraqi government to prevent the use of Iraqi lands as a starting point for attacks on neighboring countries, and the importance of equipping and developing the Iraqi air defense system to protect the airspace from repeated violations.
His Eminence called on "the Iraqi government to take measures to maintain security and stability, by enabling the federal security forces to extend their control over the borders and carry out their duties in securing them."
In an interview with Al-Ahed News, security expert Fadel Abu Ragheef indicated that “Iraq resorted, after 2003, to diversifying the sources of armament and equipment, as it started with the English doctrine, which soon turned to the Eastern European doctrine represented by Russia and the countries of the Eastern European Union.”
He added that "after 2003, there was a diversification between English, British, French, American and Russian sources as well," pointing out that "this diversity is necessary, especially since the French radars are of high capacity and high efficiency."
Abu Ragheef added, "Diversification inspires enthusiasm and competition between major countries, such as the United States, Europe, or even the socialist camp. Therefore, we do not care or pay attention to the source as much as we pay attention to the efficiency that this weapon enjoys."
In its last meeting, the Council of Ministers approved a contract by the Ministry of Defense with the French company Thales to purchase radars, as an exception to the contracting methods stipulated in Article (3) of the instructions for implementing government contracts (3 of 2014).
