Specialists warn of the expansion of air pollution in the southern region

Environmental affairs specialists have warned of an increase in concentrations of polluting elements in the atmosphere, such as lead, sulfur, and methane, as a result of the continued burning of associated gas. This problem has caused an increase in the rates of cancerous, skin, and respiratory diseases recorded by health departments, especially in the southern governorates such as Basra, Dhi Qar, Maysan, and Muthanna.
Statistics indicate that more than two thousand cancer cases are recorded in Basra Governorate alone annually, in addition to about 20 thousand cases of kidney failure and similar numbers recorded by official authorities for other diseases.
Indicators of high rates of environmental pollution in the south of the country remain dependent on the implementation of gas investment plans and stopping its toxic emissions, which, according to a number of specialists, are linked to the implementation of the fifth oil licensing round.
An expert in environmental affairs, Muhammad Kamel Zuhair, explained to Al-Sabah that the process of burning gas in the air will continue until the fifth licensing round prepared by the Ministry of Oil enters.
He added that the government program of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani came to emphasize investing in the quantities of gas burned in oil fields, in order to achieve the maximum benefit and reduce the rates of waste and pollution of this important wealth.
Zuhair pointed out that advanced companies in this field, especially the French giant Total Energy, are distinguished by their use of advanced environmentally friendly technologies and their large investments in benefiting from associated gas.
A recent meeting, which brought together specialists and stakeholders in government departments with a number of Basra representatives, to discuss the risks of widespread pollution for years, concluded that there is a percentage ranging between 35 and 40 percent of the associated gas burning in the skies of Basra Governorate and in areas in the south of the country, such as Nasiriyah and Maysan.
In turn, Director of the Environment Department in Al-Muthanna, Yousef Sawadi, told Al-Sabah: The Ministry of Environment follows a set of legal procedures to hold companies accountable that do not adhere to environmental standards, in addition to monitoring environmental violations left behind by various industrial activities.
He pointed out that the department has implemented many procedures in coordination with the Department of Environmental Protection and Improvement in the Southern Region, whereby we issue a warning to the violating entity or industrial facility, then we resort to the process of imposing fines or filing lawsuits against the violating companies and entities, until solutions are found and the incident is removed.
During the past year, according to what was confirmed by the Geospatial Analytics Company, which analyzes satellite data for the European Space Agency, Basra and other southern governorates were exposed to the largest methane cloud in the world as a result of most oil companies’ non-compliance with environmental standards.
