Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: Minister of Health, Saleh Al-Hasnawi, confirmed that the new mental health law will provide full support in various fields for those working in this field, pointing out that there is a severe shortage in the number of medical and health personnel specialized in the field of psychological treatment.
Al-Hasnawi said in his speech during a celebration held in the Ministry’s building, on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, that there are great challenges facing mental health, the most important of which is societal orientation, and how we view those who suffer from mental illness in the scientific sense, warning that mental illness is no different from other diseases that Humans are exposed to it.
He added that confronting societal trends by adopting the concept of mental illness and psychological disorder, which is no different from other diseases, is a treatable disease, and enables patients to be rehabilitated and reintegrated into society.
He explained that Iraq has suffered from many wars, from the Iran-Iraq war to the first Gulf War and the suffering of the siege, occupation, sectarian war, and the terrorist ISIS that followed. These are all psychological traumas and one of the serious causes of mental illness.
He continued, that the people of this country need a lot of psychological and community care, and in the midst of these challenges, the Ministry of Health, through the new mental health law, took into consideration the interest in workers in the field of mental health, by providing them with various types of support, calling on workers in the field Mental Health, to make many efforts to spread psychological awareness and a culture of mental health.
He pointed out that the Ministry of Health suffers from a shortage in the number of doctors and workers in the field of psychological rehabilitation, psychotherapy, social rehabilitation and psychiatric nursing, adding that our duty is not limited to treating patients only, but rather we must spread a culture of mental health and community awareness in the country.
