    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Tuesday (October 24, 2023), the Foreign Relations Committee in the House of Representatives revealed the possibility of filing lawsuits against the United States of America due to cancer in Iraq.
Committee member Representative Amer Al-Fayez said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that, “No one disagrees that the incidence of cancerous diseases in Iraq, especially Basra Governorate, is high, and it has been worrying us for years, especially with statistics that include numbers that reflect a tragedy that includes several groups, including children.”
He added, "A large percentage of cancerous diseases are due to the US Army's use of prohibited weapons in Iraq, but we do not see that the atmosphere is appropriate for filing lawsuits in this regard, and there may be no intention of filing lawsuits even though they are possible from a legal standpoint."
Al-Fayez pointed out that “prohibited weapons left a polluted environment in several governorates of Iraq, and were behind the deaths of thousands of victims in the past years, but noting that there are other factors for cancerous diseases, including gases emitted from oil fields, the danger of which must be paid attention to, especially with the growing rates of cancerous diseases.” .
On October 31, 2022, the Iraqi Ministry of Health announced that more than 30,000 cancer patients are receiving treatment in the country, expressing its concern about the delay in detecting the serious disease.
According to Ministry of Health spokesman Saif Al-Badr, “Cancer is one of the top ten causes of death in Iraq, as well as in the Middle East.”
Al-Badr believes that "cancer is a growing global problem, as the incidence rates in Iraq are less than 80 cases per 100,000 Iraqis per year," noting that "the cases recorded in the country are within the global average."
He explained that we still discover most cases at a late stage, such as the third or fourth stage of the disease, after it has spread to the body’s organs, and its treatment is more difficult, more expensive, and more complex.
