Dhi Qar Environment Director, Dr. Mohsen Aziz, told Al Mada: “The Environmental Police Center has filed more than 1,200 lawsuits since its establishment until now to prosecute activities that violate and are harmful to the environment,” noting that “the center is administratively affiliated with the Civil Defense Directorate and works technically with the Environment Directorate in The field of conducting environmental inspections and filing lawsuits against violating activities.”
He stated that “the lawsuits filed include governmental and private activities, and a large portion of them have been resolved, while the other portion is still under investigation.”
Regarding the nature of the violating activities, Aziz said, “The most prominent violating activities are the unsanitary landfill sites spread throughout Dhi Qar Governorate, which do not adhere to environmental specifications and conditions, and thus these sites are exposed to burning operations by some citizens, which results in air pollution with polluting fumes that are harmful to human health and life.” .
The Dhi Qar Environment Director continued, “There are also sewage stations that discharge their liquid waste into rivers and water sources without proper treatment, and this is considered a violation that requires taking the required legal measures.” He added, “While there are other violations in hospitals and health institutions through discharging liquid and polluted waste through sewage network without carrying out the required treatment,” noting that “the Environment Directorate has taken all legal measures regarding these violating activities and is following them up periodically for the purpose of reducing pollution.”

Aziz spoke about monitoring environmental violations in a number of governmental and private activities in which legal measures were taken, indicating that “among the administrative measures taken to reduce pollution is issuing a warning to the violating activities, and if they do not comply and address these violations, they will be closed, and if their owners do not comply with the closure procedures, they will be punished.” The owner of the violating activity filed a lawsuit before the competent courts by the Environmental Police Center.”
