    Economy News - Baghdad
The Ministry of Environment identified, on Monday, the most prominent challenges facing the treatment of the problem of discharging polluted water into rivers. While it clarified its procedures for treating the discharge of polluted water into rivers and holding violators accountable, it confirmed the existence of ongoing government efforts to address vital issues, including river pollution.
The ministry’s spokesman, Amir Ali Al-Hassoun, said, “Medical waste from hospitals is discharged into public sewage networks, and due to the limited capacity of public sewage to treat all water, it is discharged directly into the river.” He stressed that “the Ministry of Environment has imposed financial fines on hospitals that do not have water treatment units, and the Ministry of Health has been contacted to establish treatment units for consumed water in all hospitals.”
As for heavy water, Al-Hassoun explained, “The problem lies in the fact that the capacity of treatment plants is much less than the actual amount of polluted water due to rapid population growth. Therefore, the government seeks to increase the capacity of treatment plants and develop the sewage infrastructure to accommodate the increasing amounts of used water.”
He added, "The Ministry of Environment imposed financial fines on all violating treatment units, as well as rain and pumping stations. The General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers was also addressed to instruct the relevant authorities in the Baghdad Municipality to find radical solutions to limit these practices."
He pointed out that "there are major challenges facing the complete treatment of the problem of discharging polluted water into the river, as the government will need more funding and resources to expand the infrastructure and increase the capacity of treatment plants. It also requires community efforts to raise awareness and change behaviors related to dumping waste and polluted water into rivers."
Al-Hassoun stressed, "There are ongoing government efforts to deal with these vital issues, but more work and investment are still needed to overcome the remaining challenges."
He stated that "the Minister of Environment, Nizar Amedi, formed a committee for field monitoring and awareness, headed by the Administrative Deputy, Iktifa Al-Hasnawi, and the membership of the Assistant Director General of the Environmental Awareness and Media Department, the Director of the Baghdad Environment, and a number of officials in the Ministry of Environment, in addition to the Director of the Environmental Police."
He added, "This committee has been working for more than a year to conduct surprise inspection tours of health institutions, whether affiliated with the Ministry of Health or the private sector, and inspects health activities and their compliance with environmental standards, the status of wastewater treatment units, and how to treat solid waste. These campaigns are accompanied by awareness efforts by the Environmental Media Awareness Department through the distribution of publications and posters to these institutions."
