The farmers of Diwaniyah Governorate rejoiced after the approval of the winter agricultural plan amounting to 167 thousand dunams for wheat crop by the ministerial committee formed by the Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources, but they were surprised by the water outage.
A member of the General Union of Agricultural Associations, Muhammad Kashash, said in an interview with (Al-Mada), that “the winter plan was reduced from 500 thousand dunums to 167 thousand dunums by the central government, which formed a committee from the Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources,” noting that “other agricultural areas that “It did not include economic harm to the governorate and farmers.”
Dozens of farmers from Al-Shamiya, Al-Mahanawiya, and Al-Salahiya organized a demonstration on the road between Diwaniyah and Najaf Governorate to demand financial compensation from the central government and the Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources due to their agricultural lands not being included in the plan.
The demonstration coordinator, Falah Al-Abidi, said in an interview with Al-Mada: “For the second year in a row, our agricultural lands were not cultivated as a result of the lack of water shares allocated to the governorate, which affects all farmers who depend on the agricultural sector.” The demonstrators stressed that they would give a deadline to the relevant governmental authorities at the central and local government levels and the House of Representatives to implement their demands until Wednesday of this week. In the event that their demands are not responded to, there will be another escalation and pressure on the government, responding to them and implementing their demands. The demonstrators called on all farmers in the Middle Euphrates governorates to demonstrate and support the farmers of Diwaniyah Governorate for the purpose of compensating them as a result of the failure to plant strategic agricultural crops for Diwaniyah farmers. Diwaniyah Governor Maytham Al-Shahd explains, “The local government will approach the central government and the concerned authorities in Baghdad and raise the farmers’ demands for the purpose of compensating them after the Shallab farmers were compensated last season.”
Preparations are currently being made by the departments of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources in the governorate to plant the agricultural crops that were approved by the Ministerial Agricultural Committee for the winter agricultural plan.
Diwaniyah is one of the agricultural governorates in Iraq and is famous for growing strategic agricultural crops, including strawberries, wheat, barley, and various other crops, including summer and winter.
Many governorate officials support the Diwaniyah project, the agricultural capital of Iraq, but it does not contain any components that would enable it to become the agricultural capital of Iraq, as it lacks agricultural infrastructure and projects for the agricultural sector.
The central government and the Ministry of Finance launched financial compensation to compensate farmers who were unable to cultivate their agricultural lands for the rice crop, and the amounts amount to more than 95 billion dinars.
