The Iraqi government and the Japanese side, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Finance, concluded an agreement in favor of economically viable investment projects, in continuation of the cooperation that the two governments had begun at the economic level, the most important of which is financing the water supply processing project in Samawah with an amount of $300 million within the Japanese loan to establish the first station. Finance Minister Taif Sami, who signed on behalf of the Iraqi side with the Japanese ambassador accredited to Baghdad, Futoshi Matsumoto, said, in the meeting attended by “Al-Sabah”: that Iraq, in implementation of what was stated in the ministerial platform, which focused on advocating borrowing for the benefit of important projects within the Japanese loan, to contribute to Developing drinking water quantities and treating them.
Sami continued, “We are working on developing projects that contribute to developing the quantities of potable water and the effective use of water resources through the establishment of pumping stations and then final use, which in turn will contribute to increasing the processing hours and the quality of the prepared water.”
She added that “the country is in constant communication with the Japanese side at various levels and implementing various projects,” noting that “a loan will be signed for the project to improve water supply equipment in Samawah in the amount of more than 45 billion Japanese yen, equivalent to 300 million dollars, to contribute to the stability of drinking water supply.” Processed and prepared from the project.
For his part, the Japanese ambassador accredited to Baghdad, Futoshi Matsumoto, explained in his speech that the project aims to enhance economic and social development in the city, pointing out the proposal of five projects, including a two-stage loan project for the year 2024, looking forward to seeing the largest possible number of them to be included in the 2024 budget. He reiterated his government's commitment to continue supporting Iraq and its people in order to strengthen bilateral relations.
It is noteworthy that the project includes the establishment of a water treatment plant, including a desalination plant, as well as the installation of water lines from the treatment plant to the pumping station and concentrated salt water drainage lines, accompanied by work to improve the volume and quality of water and bridge the gap between supply and demand in the city of Samawah, not to mention About its contribution to mitigating the negative effects of climate change, as the station is expected to desalinate the water of the Euphrates River, which has been suffering from high salinity in recent years due to low amounts of rain.
On the same level, Director of the JICA Office in Iraq, Jin Yoneda, welcomed his participation in the signing of the Japanese loan, pointing out that it comes as a continuation of the giant projects implemented by JICA throughout Iraq, expressing his thanks to the Iraqi government for moving forward to complete the development projects that It will contribute to the economic and social development of the country.
It is noteworthy that the government of Japan has provided a loan from JICA to build about 30 huge infrastructure projects in Iraq so far, including giving priority to water sector projects as it is basic infrastructure for living.
