Türkiye continues to starve Iraq... and the stock levels portend a disaster

Iraq continues to suffer from the drought crisis despite the advent of winter, but the levels of water reserves still portend a coming water crisis after reaching the use of dead reserves, as the same problem remains in light of the lack of serious action from the government and foreign affairs towards Turkey’s deliberate abuse of cutting off water on Country,
Given its relentless efforts to build 20 dams on the headwaters of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which causes an annual disaster that kills people, livestock, and agriculture, which has clearly declined in recent years, with Iraq’s water imports declining to more than 70% of what they were previously.
Speaking about this file, an informed source reveals the numbers reached by water levels in the Mosul Dam, while confirming that the Italian company “Trevi” has completed its work in maintaining the dam, including filling the tunnel and installing stations, excavators, and equipment. The source said in a press statement followed by (Al-Mada) that “the drop in water levels in the summer in the dam is due to the work of the Turkish dam (Ilisu), which reduced Iraq’s water shares by very large proportions,” noting that “the water storage in the Mosul Dam is estimated at 2.1024 billion.” m3”.
He continues, “The water coming into Iraq has reached 706 m3/s, while the absolute water capacity is 300 m3/s,” pointing out that “the storage level of water in the dam has recorded 47.74 m3.” He adds, “The regulatory generating station for the regulatory dam has a capacity of 26 megawatts per hour,” noting that “the total amount of rain stored this year reached 100 mm.” The source stated that “the import rate for the month of December for the past ten years recorded 359 m3/s,” pointing out that “the Italian company “Trevi” has completed its work in maintaining the dam, including building the grout tunnel and installing stations, excavators, and equipment.” In addition, water expert Tahseen Al-Moussawi confirms that the percentage of Iraq’s water imports has decreased to more than 70% of the percentage that entered Iraq through the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, while he confirmed that Turkey is proceeding with the construction of 22 new dams during the coming period.
Al-Moussawi says, “The construction of these dams violates international agreements in general, and the tripartite agreement to regulate water in particular,” noting that “the completion of the construction of the Turkish Ilisu Dam will slaughter the Tigris River after the decline it has reached.”
He continues, “The water situation is very difficult while we are in the winter, so what is the situation with the arrival of the summer,” pointing out that “the country is suffering for the fourth consecutive season from a deadly crisis that has struck many aspects that live on water.”
Al-Moussawi adds: “In addition to the arbitrariness and cutting off water quotas from Iraq, the country has been affected by the global drought crisis,” adding that “the decline in the proportions of water resources is more than 70% of the proportions that used to enter Iraq through the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.”
For his part, a member of the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee, Representative Thaer Al-Jubouri, reveals the introduction of a unique experience in irrigation for the first time in Iraq.
Al-Jubouri says, “Iraq’s water situation is still complex despite the repeated rain waves, given that the vacuum in its dams is still large,” adding, “We have optimism in the coming weeks for more heavy rains that can help create flexibility in the main dams’ reservoirs.”
He points out that “the drought crisis prompted the adoption of the experiences of other countries that suffered from the repercussions of the same crisis through rationalization of consumption in the agricultural sector and optimal investment of every drop,” pointing to “changing the mechanisms for using irrigation systems because it will reduce water use by rates exceeding at least 50%.” “In comparison with the traditional methods currently adopted in large areas of the country.”
In recent years, Iraq has been suffering from a major water crisis as a result of the scarcity of quantities arriving from Turkey, which has followed a policy of thirst and attempted to exploit the crisis to obtain more economic and political gains.
