The United States considered that the attacks launched by Iraqi armed factions represent a threat, not only to its forces present in Iraq, but to the Iraqi forces as well, stressing its determination to “self-defense.”
Deputy US State Department spokesman, Vedant Patel, said during a press conference on Wednesday: “We were very clear that militias close to Iran endanger not only the coalition forces, but also the Iraqi forces, so they must be held accountable.”
He described the American strikes that targeted the Popular Mobilization Forces as "a direct response to the series of attacks on American and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria."
Patel pointed out that "American forces remain in Iraq, and we are working there alongside the Iraqi military forces and at the request of the Iraqi government in order to ensure the final defeat of ISIS."
The American official rejected "the existence of any comparison between the steps taken by the United States to protect its employees, forces, and the coalition in Iraq and the attacks launched by the Iraqi resistance," stressing that "we are defending ourselves to protect our employees, while the groups are targeting civilian citizens."
Earlier, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said that Minister Fouad Hussein had received from US Ambassador Alina Romanouksi an “important message” from her government to the Iraqi government, noting that the message “will be studied” by the Prime Minister and the relevant competent authorities, and “the next steps will be taken regarding it soon.” ".
