    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Saturday (May 4, 2024), energy expert Salah Al-Moussawi revealed what he called the gas production gap in Iraq, noting that the size of the need compared to production makes achieving sufficiency within 3 years difficult.
Al-Moussawi said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “gas consumption at the global level is increasing with remarkable activity in its markets and a large portion of industries shifting to rely on this fuel that is less polluting of the atmosphere, in addition to its other advantages compared to other types of fuel.”
He added, "Iraq, in the language of numbers, produces and burns approximately 2,800 thousand cubic meters of gas per day, while Saudi Arabia, a neighboring country that constitutes half of our country's population, produces 11 thousand cubic meters per day in order to secure the needs of electricity and petrochemical plants and home consumption in general. That is, the amount of production in Iraq is still It is very limited and its need will increase with any industrial development, especially large petrochemical plants and others.”
He pointed out that "if Iraq ends the burning of gas, its actual production will reach 2800 mqmq per day, meaning that talking about achieving self-sufficiency in gas within 3 years is very difficult in the language of numbers," pointing out that "if gas was used for home heating, for example, it would be The need is greater than the current production in high proportions, which means that achieving self-sufficiency is difficult in a record period.”
He continued, "Iraq has three steps to increase its gas production: modernizing production lines and developing discovered wells, ending gas burning, and searching for new fields to increase production."
According to estimates by the Ministry of Electricity and the Ministry of Oil, Iraq needs only 3 megawatts per day of gas to produce electricity to meet annual growth and provide 24-hour supply with a production of 35,000 megawatts, while Iraq currently produces only about 25,000 megawatts.
