Employees in Wasit complain about “weak salaries” and demand the approval of a new salary that is fair to their families

A large number of employees of government departments demonstrated in Wasit Governorate, demanding the approval of a new salary scale that is fair to all employees. Maytham Ali, a member of the demonstration’s coordination committee, told Al Mada, “The participants in the demonstration suffer from weak salaries compared to other departments and institutions affiliated with their ministries.”
He added, “The goal of the demonstration is to put pressure on the government and Parliament to amend the salary scale and approve a new scale that is fair to all employees in terms of nominal salary, allowances, and job grade, in contrast to what is prevailing now, where there is a large disparity in salaries between one ministry and another.”
He pointed out, “This demonstration is neither the first nor the last, and we will continue to demonstrate until our legitimate and legal demand is achieved. We also demand that the new salary scale be included in the 2024 budget.”
For his part, the employee at the Wasit Textile and Knitting Factory, Saad Dawoud Gharib, said in an interview with (Al-Mada), that “the large disparity in the salaries of one ministry at the expense of another is surprising and cannot be accepted, and there is no way to overcome this situation except by approving or amending the salary scale in a way that achieves The principle of equality between all employees.”
He added: “It is not fair that my salary does not exceed 800 thousand dinars and my service is 34 years, while a relative of mine whose salary exceeds one million and 350 thousand dinars and has less than 15 years of service and we both have the same certificate.” Stressing that “the government is required today, in light of the noticeable rise in prices, to amend the salary scale in a way that achieves justice between all ministries and does not give preference among employees of one ministry or body independent of another ministry.”
It is noteworthy that the Parliamentary Finance Committee announced on November 29, 2023, an agreement with the government on the minimum salaries for employees.
The head of the committee, Atwan Al-Atwani, said in media statements at the time that the Finance Committee hosted the Diwaniyah Order Committee (24) responsible for the salary scale to find out the steps it took and what increase could be achieved during the implementation of the law.
Al-Atwani explained that the allocations that the employee receives are in accordance with government decisions and that the Finance Committee agreed with the Diwaniyah Order Committee responsible for the salary scale that the minimum salaries be 425 thousand dinars upwards.
It is noteworthy that for more than four years, the issue of the salary scale has been still preoccupying the majority of employees who feel unfair and unfair due to their low salaries, and their demands for a new salary scale return from time to time, but until now the salary scale has not been amended and the matter is still pending between the government and Parliament.
