    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Kirkuk Provincial Council member from the Arab Bloc, Muhammad Ibrahim, confirmed today, Saturday (March 23, 2024), that the situation in Kirkuk is still complex, considering that the best solution is the continuation of the current governor.
Ibrahim said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "Every political party and every component still adheres to its opinion. The Kurds insist on the position of governor and say that they are the majority, but they will not be able to obtain it in the vote within the provincial council, that is, they were unable to reach nine seats."
He added, "It is in Kirkuk's interest at the present time to remain in the current governor in order to achieve stability and the continuation of service projects, and the participation of other components will be in other key positions."
He pointed out that "there are other meetings that will be held under the auspices of the Prime Minister to bring viewpoints closer together and try to resolve the government formation issue, which must be resolved quickly because the situation remaining without forming a government is not in anyone's interest."
Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani had met more than once with members of the Kirkuk Provincial Council and the political blocs that make up the council, to reach a formula and solution to end the crisis of forming the local government, distributing the positions of the provincial council, and convening it, to no avail.
The Kirkuk crisis can be summed up by both the Kurdish and Arab parties holding on to the position of governor, with the number of seats for the Kurds being 6 seats and the Arabs also 6 seats, while the Turkmen Arabs are lined up with two seats, and one Christian seat is lined up with the Kurds, at a time when each party needs to achieve a majority with 9. Seats to form local government.
