Mawazine News - Baghdad
The President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Rashid, warned today, Sunday, of the impact of climate change on water resources, which threatens food security and future generations in the country, calling for the construction of dams and the establishment of green belts for cities to reduce the risks of this change and limit the rise in temperatures.
This came in a speech he delivered during the launch of the conference on drought, climate change, and economic and demographic policies in Iraq, held in Erbil under the auspices of the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani.
President Rashid said in his speech, “There is a major climate change occurring in Iraq and it affects economic life, the agricultural sector, and water resources in our country,” noting that “water is the greatest natural resource to sustain life, and climate change and the environment are one of the problems facing countries of the world, not just Iraq.” ".
He stressed that the increase in population has affected the environment and greatly threatened food security, in addition to the high rate of drought in Iraq and the lack of rain that occurred in recent years, in addition to not granting neighboring countries a fair share of water with the adoption of traditional irrigation methods by farmers in the country, and also Rising temperatures on the Earth's surface and the use of agricultural fertilizers have all had a negative impact on the environment.
Rashid pointed out that one of the problems we face in Iraq is climate change and high temperatures, which leads to water pollution and desertification of agricultural lands, stressing that all of this affects the environment and threatens food security and water wealth for future generations in Iraq.
He noted that Iraq seeks to reduce the negative effects of climate change by building many dams and seeking to store water, calling for the establishment of a green belt around Iraqi cities to reduce the risks of climate change and its impact on the environment.
He called for building dams in the Kurdistan Region and storing rainwater and snow, adding: We should seek to issue a decision regarding improving the environment, and we must work with all our might to store water in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
