    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Representative Ali Al-Bindawi, confirmed today, Sunday (May 12, 2024), that controlling the Iraqi borders with neighboring countries is a priority in the national security strategy, while noting that there are three controls governing it.
Al-Bindawi said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "As part of the priorities of the security effort, a higher committee has already been formed headed by National Security Advisor Qasim Al-Araji in order to negotiate with neighboring countries to create long-term understandings about mechanisms for controlling and fortifying the borders in a manner consistent with the interest of common security."
Al-Bandawi added, "Three dimensions have been adopted to control the Iraqi borders: deployment, repositioning, and filling gaps, leading to fortifying the borders with frameworks that block the way for any attempts aimed at infiltrating or smuggling any prohibited materials."
He pointed out that "among the memorandums of understanding concluded during the Turkish President's recent visit to Baghdad is an important clause related to border security and the need for Turkey to withdraw its forces and control the borders by the Iraqi side while establishing important mechanisms for security coordination to ensure achieving a greater benefit that reflects positively on the security of the two countries."
On Sunday (February 25, 2024), the spokesman for joint operations, Major General Tahseen Al-Khafaji, revealed three goals behind the strategy of controlling the Iraqi borders.
Al-Khafaji told "Baghdad Today", "Joint operations and the Ministry of Interior, through the border guard formations, have a comprehensive strategy in implementing, controlling and closing the borders according to paths that guarantee an effective security grip and capabilities capable of achieving the goals, and it enjoys direct support from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces." ".
He added, "There are three main goals behind the strategy of controlling the borders, which are not limited to Turkey, but to all neighboring countries without exception, by protecting the national economy by preventing smuggling and blocking the way for anyone to infiltrate outside the legal frameworks, in addition to the presence of security goals."
Al-Khafaji pointed out that "there is no exception in implementing the strategy of controlling and closing the borders and deploying the guard, which is supported by high capabilities through the deployment of ambushes, stations, and usurers, leading to the use of modern frameworks for monitoring and follow-up."
