Iran's ambassador to Iraq, Muhammad Kazem Al Sadiq, confirmed today, Sunday (May 12, 2024), that the security agreement between Tehran and Baghdad includes three clauses, while stating that Iraq has paid its debts.
Al Sadiq said in a press interview, according to what was translated by "Baghdad Today", "The Americans are playing with words, but the Iraqi government, the people, and the resistance factions are disturbed by this matter and want the withdrawal of American forces."
He added, "The Sudanese government laid the foundation for ending the issue of the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq during his term as prime minister and ending this presence. In this context, two rounds of negotiations took place between Baghdad and Washington in the recent period," indicating that "in these negotiations, there is no sense of rhetorical unity on the part of "sides."
Al Sadiq continued, “The Iraqis are emphasizing setting a withdrawal schedule and the Americans are emphasizing changing the mission of their military forces,” noting that “the Americans at some point transformed the mission of this country’s military forces into advisory, and now they want to change the advisory mission to bilateral cooperation. In reality, the Americans are manipulating words.” The Iraqis must pursue these negotiations more intelligently so that the issue of exit can be completed as quickly as possible.”
He went on to say, "We feel that Sudanese is serious about this matter, and the resistance forces in Iraq are cooperating with the government and have set a date for this as soon as possible."
The Iranian ambassador said about the statement of the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades a while ago and some of what was published in this statement about not targeting the American forces, that “what was published in this statement was mostly an issue between the Iraqi government and the resistance forces, and the Iraqi government says that it is in order to end the issue of the withdrawal of forces.” "The American military will withdraw from Iraq more easily and prepare a timetable in this regard. We need to calm down and not create excuses for the American side. In this regard, and with the consultations that took place, talk of attacking American centers by the Iraqi resistance forces stopped for a period to see if the negotiations between the government and the Americans reach a goal." .
Regarding the claims of American officials that the resistance forces in Iraq are agents of Iran, the ambassador stressed that “this claim made by the Americans is an insult to the resistance. The resistance in the countries of the region is completely independent, and works wherever and whenever it sees fit.”
He stated, "In order to increase their hostility towards Iran, the Americans constantly attack Iran, while as we mentioned, the resistance takes its own decisions and acts on its own, and sometimes like what we saw in the statement of the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades, and they (the Brigades) also complain about Iran."
Al Sadiq said, "We have helped the resistance at times and we have officially announced this, and we do not hesitate to express it," explaining, "It has also been announced many times."
Al Sadiq described Iranian-Iraqi relations as “strategic, deep and broad,” noting, “We have repeatedly warned the Iraqi authorities that our national security is our red line regarding the presence of activities by Kurdish separatist forces in the Kurdistan region.”
He explained, "There are three important provisions in the security agreement between Tehran and Baghdad, which include monitoring the borders from the central government, disarming the opposition, and exchanging criminals. The agreement also includes an emphasis on transferring these opposition forces from the border to the depths of Iraqi territory."
In the field of energy, the Iranian ambassador said, "Iraq has no debts to Iran. Our contracts are in dollars, but because of the sanctions, Iraq cannot give us dollars, and a large portion of the gas that Iraq imports will come from Iran."
Regarding how to obtain Iranian money from Iraq, he answered, “Through this money, we paid some of our debts to a number of countries, and we also purchased food and goods that are not subject to sanctions through these sources, and to pay the costs of Hajj, we took money from these sources, or were paid.” The debt of the Islamic Development Bank was paid through these funds, and part of Turkmenistan’s debt was paid due to the export of gas from these sources.”
He added, "Iran is considered Iraq's primary partner in the economic field, and the volume of trade exchange between Iran and Iraq currently amounts to about 12 billion dollars. This is a relatively good number compared to other commercial transactions and is expected to rise to 20 billion dollars."
