    Economy News - Baghdad
The head of the Federation of Trade Unions, Walid Nimah, estimated the number of foreign workers in Iraq at one million and 500 thousand workers, although the official statistics are less than that, while he launched an attack on the Iraqi laws related to this field.
In an interview with the official newspaper, followed by Al-Eqtisad News, Nehme said, “The number of workers, according to the estimates of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, is 750,000 foreign workers, but we see that the number is greater than announced and may reach 1,500,000 workers.”
He added, "Oil companies have attracted a lot of expatriate workers, specifically Chinese, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi workers," stressing that "the weakness of the law has caused this number of workers to rise, and some of them sometimes form networks that carry out killing, robbery, and human trafficking."
Nehme continued, "The procedures of the Residence Department in the Ministry of Interior must be decisive in this matter in cooperation with the Inspection Department in the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, as well as planning in order to reduce this phenomenon."
He stressed that "the penetration of foreign workers has found space for them even in beauty centers, even though they are not qualified and some of them have many problems with residency, forcing them to spend the night inside the workplace, in addition to their spread in sewing and plastics factories."
