Since the Military Industrialization Authority law was issued in 2019, the wheel of military industrialization has begun to turn, in a relentless effort to achieve several goals at the same time, including developing the industrial sector, supporting the treasury, and improving the reality of equipping and arming the security services.
In this regard, the Chairman of the Authority, Engineer Mustafa Ati, expressed his confidence in the Authority’s ability to meet the need of our security and military forces for types of light and medium weapons, as well as ammunition of various types.
Ati explained in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that the authority is continuing to establish factories specialized in producing weapons, armored vehicles, and drones according to the latest international specifications in order to achieve self-sufficiency, revealing the production of the first large, advanced combat armored vehicle that will be field tested soon.
Ati stated that “the Military Industrialization Authority was established pursuant to Law 25 of 2019, and its central formations consist of 7 operating departments, as well as two formations affiliated with the Military Industrialization, and that these formations were from the formations of the former Military Industrialization Authority,” and pointed out that “the two formations affiliated with the Military Industrialization include Several factories, including approximately 14 factories in the General Military Industries Company, as well as 12 factories in the General Company for Copper and Mechanical Industries.” He added, "Under the authority's new policy, new factories were established in partnership with the private sector, and therefore, the authority is now embarking on new projects and new factories containing high-technology machines and equipment in the fields of military and civil industries."
Regarding the products, he explained that “the Authority focuses primarily on the military aspect that is compatible with the requirements of the security forces, and it also has a plan for civilian production,” and noted that “the Authority and its formations have been able to establish specialized factories in the field of producing armored vehicles, drones, cameras, binoculars, and wireless communications devices.” And light weapons, medium weapons, and light equipment, as well as medium equipment, in addition to old production, which is the production of cannons, mortars, and mortar bombs.”
He pointed out, “The Authority is intending to complete important projects on the civil side, including the production of oils and grease for military and civilian wheels, as well as the establishment of a factory for the production of electric poles and protective fences, and a factory for the rehabilitation of power transformers affiliated with the Ministry of Electricity,” revealing the Authority’s readiness to establish a factory for the production of electric cars. As well as what serves the military and civilian sides.
Regarding contracts with the concerned authorities, Ati stated, “The Popular Mobilization Authority is the main supporter of the Military Industrialization Authority in sustaining its work, as well as the Ministry of Interior and other security agencies. A number of contracts have been signed to supply these security agencies with light weapons and equipment, as well as drones, cameras, binoculars, and armored combat vehicles.” He explained that “the value of the contracts signed until the end of 2023 exceeded 370 billion dinars, and we are entering into new contracts with the Ministry of Interior in the field of light weapons and armor.” He pointed out "the exploitation of land belonging to the former military industrialization within the formations of the General Company for Military Industries to build an integrated military manufacturing city. This city was established after it was rehabilitated and in partnership with the private sector," indicating that "there are more than 12 factories in the city with complete infrastructure, machinery and equipment, and we... We are about to open other factories, and we also have other factories in Abu Ghraib,” revealing the readiness to exploit a land of 60 dunams to establish new factories there.
He stressed that "the goal of the Military Industrialization Authority is to be a fundamental supporter of the national economy in terms of reducing imports of what the security services need, and supportive of the national economy in civilian industries," indicating that "within two years - the age of re-establishing the Military Industrialization Authority again - great steps have been made." Now we are advanced in multiple fields, and we hope, within our plans and strategy, that the Military Industrialization Authority will be a key figure in supporting the national economy.”
Ati said: “It is part of the strategy of the Military Industrialization Authority to support the security services in self-sufficiency in light weapons, equipment, medium weapons, medium ammunition, and field artillery, and this is the goal that we seek, in addition to that we are in a race against time in establishing factories, even if there was a strategy.” With a period of five years, implementation will be less than this period.”
Regarding parliamentary cooperation with the Authority, he explained that “many parliamentary committees support the work of the Military Industrialization Authority, especially the Security and Defense Committee, by communicating with us frequently and directly to support this body.” He added that “our visit a while ago to the Finance Committee is to explain what it has achieved and what the Authority aspires to.” ", stressing that, "If our products are purchased by the security forces, we will be ready to dispense with state budgets, and thus we can finance ourselves and the projects with the participation of the private sector without the financial need from the state."
The head of the Military Industrialization Authority, Mustafa Ati, concluded his speech to “Al-Sabah” by saying: “We have announced the production of the first large advanced combat armored vehicle, the designs and technology of which have been fully purchased, and, God willing, its manufacture will be completely settled in Iraq, and this depends on the cooperation of the security forces with us in concluding Contracts in this field, and we will have a field trial of this vehicle in the presence of the Minister of the Interior.” He added, “If there are contracts, we will be producers of this armored vehicle and other types. Also, this armored vehicle is advanced and meets the actual need of the security forces as it is a people and combat carrier equipped with thermal cameras and binoculars.” It has everything that meets their needs and keeps pace with current military development.”
