    Baghdad today - Erbil
Today, Saturday (April 6, 2024), Professor of Political Science at Salahaddin University, Sirwan Othman, accused Iran of seeking to remove the Kurdistan Democratic Party from the political arena and weaken it, for the purpose of completely controlling the region in a repeat of the scenario of what happened with the Sadrist movement, suggesting that the region’s file would be raised during a visit. Prime Minister to Washington.
Othman said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “there are parties that want to remove and weaken the Democratic Party, and most of these decisions that were issued from Baghdad had a clear goal to weaken the Democratic Party.”
Othman added, “America and the international community put pressure with the aim of amending the Democratic Party’s decision and its withdrawal from boycotting the elections,” suggesting that “it took place in the discussions of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’a Al-Sudani’s visit to Washington,” adding that “there is American dissatisfaction with the pressure exerted in "The last stage against the Kurds."
He pointed out that "Iran wants to remove democracy from the political arena and weaken it, for the purpose of completely controlling the region, as happened in the formation of the Iraqi government when the Sadrist movement was removed from the political scene."
Othman stressed that "America and the international community will continue to put pressure, for the purpose of the Democratic Party's return to participation, but the matter will be delayed and will not be achieved without implementing the party's conditions."
The Kurdistan Democratic Party had previously announced, "not to participate in the elections for the Kurdistan region, scheduled for next June 10."
The party justified its decision by saying that it did not want to "legitimize an unconstitutional and undemocratic election," criticizing "all the constitutional violations practiced by the Federal Court against the Kurdistan Region and its constitutional institutions in general."
He criticized "the unconstitutional amendments to the election law for the sixth session of the Kurdistan Parliament," especially "in the articles pertaining to determining the system of electoral districts, the quota (quotas) for components, the number of seats, the body supervising the election, and the body competent to decide on electoral appeals."
The Kurdistan Democratic Party also threatened to withdraw from the political process in Baghdad unless the constitution is “implemented.”
