The writer and Christian personality, Boutros Nakhati, said that the Federal Court’s decision regarding the return of the seats of the components in the Kurdistan Regional Parliament does not reflect the end of these components.
He considered, during an interview on Kurdistan TV, that the Federal Court’s decision to restore and reduce component seats was “worse than the decision to cancel them.”
Nakhti explained that the Federal Court “tried to abolish the components’ seats permanently, but restored them again but reduced their numbers, and they do not reflect the rights of the components.”
Pointing out that “Christians must boycott the elections after the Federal Court’s decision.”
The writer pointed out that 25% of Christians are present in Dohuk Governorate, but according to the Federal Court’s decision, not enough seats were allocated for them.
The Judicial Commission for Elections decided to grant the components of the region five seats in the Kurdistan Parliament out of 100 if they competed in the elections.
While it overturned the grievances of those components regarding the 11 seats allocated to them, which were canceled by the Federal Supreme Court (the highest judicial authority in Iraq).
The Judicial Commission for Elections distributed the five seats as follows: two seats in Erbil Governorate, the same in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, and one seat in Dohuk Governorate.
The spokeswoman for the Elections Commission, Jumana Al-Ghalai, confirmed in a statement to Kurdistan that the Judicial Elections Commission issued a decision on May 20, 2024, overturning the decision of the Board of Commissioners, which included a response to the grievance submitted by representatives of the national and religious components in the Kurdistan Region, regarding the 2024 Kurdistan Region elections. .
This came based on the Federal Court’s decision stating the unconstitutionality of the 11 seats mentioned in Article 1 of the Kurdistan Region Elections Law, No. 1 of 1992, as amended, and accordingly the Kurdistan Parliament consists of 100 seats.
