Customs: The government reduced duties on food, industrial materials, and medicines to prevent their prices from rising

The General Authority of Customs confirmed that the government has reduced duties on food, industrial materials, and medicines to 1% or less. To prevent the rise in prices, and while she indicated that the process of increasing revenues is linked to the amount of fees, she identified the most significant challenges facing the Authority’s work.
The head of the General Customs Authority, Hassan Al-Ugaili, said, “The General Customs Authority is considered an executive body for the decisions issued by the government in accordance with the applicable laws.”
He added, “The process of increasing revenues is linked to the customs duties conducted by the Authority and how the fees are determined is linked to the financial policy followed by the state, and this policy has social and economic dimensions, all of which are reflected in the increase and decrease in revenues.”
He continued, “The Iraqi government is heading to support food supplies as well as medicines. For example, it has reduced the customs duty on foodstuffs to reach only 1%, and on medicines half of one percent, and the customs duty on materials used in industry is also half of one percent, and this falls within “Government measures to support prices of these materials from rising in the markets.”
Al-Ugaili continued, “The increase or decrease in revenues is linked to a number of things, including administrative procedures and follow-up, and this is one of them, but the basic foundation is the amount of fee collection, which affects the total size of fees, and with all of these things, our procedures are moving towards maximizing revenues.”
Regarding the challenges facing the Authority’s work, Al-Ugaili explained, “There are major challenges facing the Authority’s work, most notably the work of its staff in remote areas on the land, air, and sea borders for a period of 15 continuous days,” noting that “the Authority is still working to provide infrastructure that guarantees the employee A comfortable position so that he can carry out his duties, in addition to the employee’s distance from city centers, which makes him vulnerable to pressures from stakeholders and beneficiaries, and all of these challenges affect the employee’s work and productivity.”
