Earth News/ Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, discussed today, Wednesday, with his Tajik counterpart, the water file and its challenges.
A statement by the Ministry of Water Resources, received by Earth News, stated that, "Within a high-level bilateral meeting of its Minister Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani with the Tajik Minister of Water and Energy Daler Duma on the sidelines of the work of the Ninth World Water Forum / Dakar 2022, he stressed the critical importance of water to meet the challenges of climate change and achieve security." Food and energy security in the midst of competition over water shares among riparian countries without binding agreements proving the right of countries to obtain their adequate water shares in quantity and quality.
He added that he "stressed the importance of sharing harm in cases of scarcity, as in benefit-sharing, which was emphasized by countries in the recommendations of the Ninth Global Forum."
For his part, the Tajik minister clarified that “water brings together all countries despite the distances and borders,” noting “the importance of implementing the recommendations of the recent global climate conferences in maintaining temperatures, which caused their rapid rise and increase in snowmelt and consequently the rise in sea level and exposing the lowlands to danger, which necessitates a mobilization of International support to confront those challenges, whose forms differed between countries, but they cause the same harm to countries.”
The Tajik minister added, "Real measures are taken for joint and serious cooperation to find effective solutions and practical applications in this regard, and that the State of Tajikistan is a source country for a group of rivers that flow in Central Asian countries, but it has agreements that establish the rights of riparian countries and are constantly updated in joint consultation."
The Tajik minister "invited the minister to participate in the water conference, which will be held in Tajikistan next June."
At the end of the meeting, Al-Hamdani expressed his "hope that the riparian countries of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers will reach common understandings that prove their water rights from the two rivers, and that Iraq continues in these endeavors within the legal frameworks and international norms."
