    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Monday (August 5, 2024), economic expert Nabil Al-Marsoumi detailed the outstanding issues surrounding the oil fields shared between Iraq and Kuwait after the discovery of the Al-Nukhdha field.
Al-Marsoumi said on his Facebook page, which was followed by "Baghdad Today": "The fields shared between Iraq and Kuwait were and still are a subject of dispute and turmoil, and the main problem between the two countries has been in the demarcation of the borders since 1993. Most of these fields have common structures extending on both sides and dating back to the Cretaceous period. These fields mean that the physical properties of the rocks containing crude oil are identical."
“Kuwait has been exploring its offshore fields for a long time, and Shell and Kuwait Oil Company drilled some wells in the 1960s and 1980s, but the wells in the Kuwaiti offshore sector only yielded some small, non-commercial oil discoveries. It seemed that the geological structure was basically uneven and unorganized, meaning that the sediments sloped deeper towards the east, which did not provide any major reservoirs to hold oil and gas accumulations. Then, on June 14, the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation announced the discovery of the Al-Nukhidha field,” he explained.
He added, "The Al-Nukhda marine field is located 45 miles east of Failaka Island, and its area is 96 km2. Initial estimates of its reserves indicate the presence of about 2.1 billion barrels of light oil, and about 5.1 trillion standard cubic feet of gas, equivalent to 3.2 billion barrels of oil equivalent."
Iraqi experts say that the location of the field is included in the maps of Iraq before 1994, and what Kuwait is doing in announcing oil explorations in this location is a pure legal violation, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must appeal these statements and present them to international courts and the United Nations.
Yesterday, Sunday, the Parliamentary Oil Committee confirmed that the “Al-Nukhda” field, which Kuwait announced its recent discovery, is located within the areas shared between Iraq and Kuwait, and stressed the necessity for the investment to be joint between the two countries in accordance with the International Maritime Convention and international norms and covenants.
Committee member Adnan Al-Jaberi said in a statement to the official newspaper that Iraq has shared fields in the Gulf, and has the right to explore them between it and the countries near the Gulf states, pointing out that the rights are established in the 1981 International Maritime Convention, which includes all international charters and covenants and stipulates respect for rights between those countries.
He added that Iraq has a right to the economic zone and shared territorial waters, noting that Kuwait has annexed Iraq's economic zones, whether in the Dorra or Al-Nukhatha fields, which are located within the Iraqi economic zone, or at the very least within the shared areas.
Al-Jaberi explained that, according to diplomatic norms and international conventions, joint areas cannot be invested by one of the two countries, but rather by both of them, and there must be an agreement with Iraq on joint investment of everything that exists between them.
