    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Sunday (September 29, 2024), Professor of Political Science Khalifa Al-Tamimi presented an academic reading of the events taking place in the Middle East after the assassination of the Secretary-General of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah.
Al-Tamimi said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The situation is very difficult and sensitive in the Middle East, and Israel is proceeding with its escalation plan, and it is not a secret. Rather, its goals were announced by the head of the occupation government in the United Nations building in a message of defiance to the international community because it realizes that Washington will not abandon it, while believing that it has an opportunity to eliminate the wings of the resistance that have exhausted Israel for decades."
He added, "The Middle East has two options. The first is that Israel will continue the escalation and strike the wings of the resistance in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, and penetrate Lebanon, which means the situation will explode further, which may lead to the expansion of the circle of conflict and the direct involvement of America. This will be a pivotal moment at the regional level, and perhaps the beginning of a spark of war at the global level."
Al-Tamimi pointed out that, "The second option is very weak and revolves around Washington's efforts to calm things down and find a political approach that saves the situation from exploding, but in the midst of what we see of its unlimited support for Israel, we see that it is not serious about calming the situation and there is a lot of evidence, and therefore we are facing a difficult and sensitive stage."
He said, "Any targeting of Iraq will be met with a response from the resistance factions, but the question is about the targets that will be hit, the extent of their impact, and what the response will be, stressing that "the situation in general is very dangerous and reaching the stage of comprehensive war is no longer fears as much as it is a reality looming on the horizon at any moment."
Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have been escalating since the outbreak of the Gaza War on October 7, 2023, which sparked confrontations between the party and Israeli forces. Until September 17, which was a major turning point, both in terms of the form of the confrontations and the escalation of their pace.
On Tuesday, September 17, Lebanon witnessed a new form of confrontation, as hundreds of pagers “carried by Hezbollah members” exploded simultaneously, leading to the martyrdom of dozens of people, including leaders of the party, and the injury of more than 2,800 people, including children and the elderly, in different areas of Lebanon.
The next day, September 18, while Hezbollah was holding a funeral for some of the Pager martyrs, several explosions occurred, but this time they were to wireless communication devices, which led to the martyrdom of at least 25 people and the injury of more than 450 in different areas.
After the two waves of electronic explosions, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah came out with statements condemning Israel and pointing the finger at it for the two attacks. He said that the attacks were a declaration of war and threatened Israel with a harsh response, while Israel said that the war with Hezbollah had entered a new phase.
On Friday, September 27, Israeli aircraft bombed the southern suburbs of Beirut, targeting a Hezbollah command center. Initial media reports indicated that the target of the raid was the party’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah. However, none of the reports were confirmed throughout the night and until the following morning.
On Saturday, September 28, the Israeli army announced, through its Arabic-language spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah, saying that Friday’s attacks killed Nasrallah and a number of the party’s leaders, most notably Ali al-Karaki, commander of the southern front, and the commander of the missile unit, Muhammad Ali Ismail, and his deputy, Hussein Ahmad Ismail. Hours after the Israeli announcement, Hezbollah issued an official statement mourning its secretary-general.
Nasrallah's martyrdom sparked widespread reactions internally and externally. Lebanon declared three days of mourning for his martyrdom, while Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, declared five days of mourning in Iran. The capital, Tehran, witnessed anti-Israel protests after Nasrallah's martyrdom.
