    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Political researcher Muhammad Ali Al-Hakim confirmed today, Wednesday (October 16, 2024), that the dismissed Parliament Speaker Muhammad Al-Halbousi continues to obstruct the election of any alternative to him, despite the vacancy of the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives for nearly 11 months.
Al-Hakim told Baghdad Today, "Despite all the political activity over the past months and the various mediations to decide on the election of the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, there are still clear obstacles to Halbousi deciding the matter due to not electing any alternative to him," stressing that "he wants the position to remain vacant until the end of the current parliamentary session."
He explained that "Al-Halbousi fears that any person will reach the presidency of the parliament at the present time, even if he is from the same party," noting that "he fears losing his political influence, especially since we are approaching parliamentary elections, and for this reason he is obstructing any movement with the aim of electing a new speaker of parliament, and for this reason he and those with him threatened to foil any election session held in the coming days."
The Fatah Alliance, led by Hadi al-Amiri, confirmed on Friday (September 13, 2024) that the candidate Mahmoud al-Mashhadani is the closest to the presidency of the Iraqi Parliament, while revealing the Coordination Framework’s efforts to hold an election session.
The coalition’s MP, Mukhtar al-Moussawi, said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “the majority of political forces support and endorse al-Mashhadani, especially after the Azm and Sovereignty coalitions announced their support for him, and before that, the Progress Party announced his nomination. This means that the majority of Sunni political forces support him, and that is why he has become the closest.”
He explained that "the Coordination Framework seeks to hold a session to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the coming days, as it wants to resolve the issue quickly, as it has had a negative impact on the entire political process."
On November 14, 2023, the Federal Supreme Court, the highest judicial authority in Iraq, decided to terminate the membership of Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, following a lawsuit filed against him by MP Laith al-Dulaimi, accusing him of forging his resignation from the House of Representatives. As a result, the Federal Court ruled to terminate their membership.
Despite the numerous legal and constitutional violations, and the fraud scandal announced by the Iraqi judiciary, the dismissed Speaker of Parliament, Mohammed al-Halbousi, according to observers, is still using his influence to obstruct the selection of a new Speaker of Parliament after three sessions were held without passing the alternative.
All political and popular circles are waiting for the vote on the new Speaker of Parliament to end the Halbousi era and the functioning of the Parliament, in order to complete the basic oversight and legislative role of the Council.
