The Ministry of Water Resources will begin pumping 100 m3/second into the Euphrates River from Lake Tharthar at the beginning of next month, after increasing the number of pumps in it from 13 to 38, and as part of efforts to strengthen the river, which is suffering from a severe decrease in its level, while committees have been formed to remove all violations and maintain pumping stations to provide the water discharges required for the winter agricultural season.
The ministry had previously announced that the rainfall in the winter of 2024 will be less than that in 2023, at a time when the country has not yet regained its water reserves that it lost over four consecutive drought seasons, which reached less than nine billion cubic meters in the fall of last year, after exceeding 50 billion in 2019.
The Assistant Director General of the General Authority for Irrigation and Drainage Projects Operation in the province, Ghazwane Abdul Amir Al-Sahlani, said in an interview with Al-Sabah: The General Faw Company in the ministry has equipped 25 huge electric pumps of European origin, and implemented an electrical line for them, which were installed at the Tharthar station to be added to 13 similar pumps, bringing their number to 38. Their mission, which they will begin early next month, will be to supply the Euphrates River with 100 m3/second, which is suffering from a dangerous decrease in its level due to the decrease in its flow from Turkey.
In the same context, he pointed out that his ministry has formed an operations room of committees to remove all violations in cooperation with the security forces and maintain pumping stations to provide the required water discharges for the winter agricultural season, in addition to raising pumps on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and the main rivers to ensure the delivery of water to all areas covered by the agricultural plan, with the application of the 24-hour rationing system, while continuing to follow up on all procedures, in addition to organizing major campaigns to maintain regulators and control facilities, in addition to continuing projects to line rivers and streams with concrete blankets in the governorates of Diyala, Diwaniyah, Karbala, Maysan and Wasit.
