How to move to Canada: Immigration website crashes as Donald Trump romps home to election victory
Moving to live in Canada is not easy but not impossible either

The Canadian immigration site has broken as people look to leave the US in the immediate aftermath of Donald Trump's election as the country's new president.
The official website for 'Citizenship and Immigration Canada' has stopped working, apparently because of the sheer number of people looking to emigrate to the country from south of the border.
Canada's website would usually offer ways of applying either to live in or become a citizen of the country. But all those people trying to access it are actually only able to see is a long loading page with no proper access to the website.

Trump's victory is expected to foster huge anxiety among his opponents.
A similar rush for the exit was seen in the UK in the wake of the 2015 general election and this summer's Brexit vote – an issue that the European Union is looking to potentially solve by allowing people to keep their European citizenship.
Canada's official Twitter account appeared to reference the US election result in a tweet posted just as it became clear that Mr Trump was about to win the race for the White House.

In Canada, immigrants are encouraged to bring their cultural traditions with them and share them with their fellow citizens.

Canada has been active in taking in refugees from a range of countries in recent months. The government has run a campaign to welcome people fleeing the war in Syria, for instance, and has been praised for being so welcoming in greeting refugees from countries around the world.

A lot of stars said they would move to Canada and other countries if Donald Trump won the US election, so it looks like it’s time for them to pack their bags.

Donald Trump’s historic win means goodbye to the Obamas and the Clintons, of course, but it also means goodbye to some of America’s top entertainers … if they keep their word.
And if Canada’s immigration website crashing last night, as state after state came in for Trump, is any indication, a goodly number may already be packing their bags.
Here’s a list of those who’ve promised to leave:
“Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston – “Absolutely, I would definitely move. It’s not real to me that that would happen. I hope to God it won’t.”
Actor Samuel Jackson – “If that motherf–—er becomes president, I’m moving my black ass to South Africa.”
“Girls” celebrity Lena Dunham – “I know a lot of people have been threatening to do this, but I really will. I know a lovely place in Vancouver.”
“House of Cards” actress Neve Campbell, already a Canadian citizen, has promised to repatriate herself.
“Orange is the New Black” actress Natasha Lyonne has picked a “mental hospital” for her political exile.
Cher – “I’m moving to Jupiter.”
Miley Cyrus – “I am moving if he is president. I don’t say things I don’t mean!”
Barbara Streisand – “I’m either coming to your country if you’ll let me in, or Canada.”
Singer Ne-Yo, like so many others, plans to bug out to nearby Canada.
Comedian Amy Schumer – “I will need to learn to speak Spanish, because I will move to Spain or somewhere.”
Chelsea Handler – “I did buy a house in another country just in case. So all these people that threaten to leave the country and then don’t — I actually will leave that country.”
Former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart’s getaway plan is among the more extreme. He’s planning on “going to another planet,” although he did specify a particular planet.
Whoopi Goldberg – “Maybe it’s time for me to move, you know. I can afford to go.”
Keegan-Michael Key’s planned exile to Canada doesn’t sound like too much of a hardship – “It’s like, 10 minutes from Detroit. That’s where I’m from; my mom lives there. It’d make her happy too.”
Comedian George Lopez is the only future emigre who’s vowing to move South. Indeed, he says Hispanics will “all go back.”
Ali Wentworth, wife of ABC newsman George Stephanopoulous, said that “If Trump wins, we’ll start looking at real estate in Sydney, Australia. No crime, no guns.”
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg – “Now it’s time for us to move to New Zealand” (she’s already backtracked and apologized).
Al Sharpton has plans for destinations unknown and says he has been “reserving my ticket out of here.”
Of course, threats to leave the country have been heard many times out of Hollywood before past elections, but little ever comes of it. America has been waiting since 2000 for Alec Baldwin to keep his “unequivocal” promise to leave. Even his wife-at-the time, Kim Bassinger, promised to leave with him. Rocker Eddie Vedder, actor Matt Damon and director Robert Altman were supposed to depart on the same boat, but they stayed.
Barbra Streisand holds the record for entertainers-in-exile-who-are-still-here. Her promise to leave dates back to the Clinton-Bush Sr. campaign of 1992. She’s still here.

    O.K.    it's gramma's turn...
(half my family live in the states) I understand all of this.

So you are upset and mad that Trump won and your first resonse is "I'm gonna move to Canada"
     (get over it!)

What are going to do?  If you're married with kids and live in the southern States - you have alot
    of decisions to make ....
Like - I have to tell the kids we are moving to live in Canada .. and your children say "where"
and they say - I dont want to move because all my school friends live here -  whaaa!
Then you have to inform your parents and siblings and friends.
And then you have to sell your house or condo.(another headache!)

Then you have to decide what Province you want to live in.  Can you get a job there and
    buy or rent a house
And find a school for your children.
If you choose to live in Ontario (where Toronto is ) your neighboring Province is Quebec and
you might have to learn to speak a bit of the French language.

Then you have to learn the metric system  (which our present Prime Ministers father= Pierre
Trudeau shoved down our throats when he was Prime Minister.

All of North America (Canada & the USA) was surveyed by 'miles' -  not kilometers!
(That is just one thing that has always ticked me off)

This is what I think  .... you are really mad now  ... just think about all the nice things
that make you happy where you live.

Give it a week - 7 days and when you are sitting in you car or deck .... just slap your face
'really hard' and be thankful for what you have.

Moving to another country is a hardship.

Good grief!  Give Trump a chance.

If you don't like it .... then move.

This is just my personal opinion.

    Always be thankful.

    Thanks weslin3,

I was trying to be light and give a 'reality check' to those who would upset their life and move
to Canada or another country.  People who are perfectly happy where they live.
Most have their parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles, friends etc where they live.
Why get so mad just because Trump got in and Hillary didn't. (Or anybody else)

I never even touched on all of our Canadian 'thingys' that will really Annoy you Americans.

First - you need to learn the 'metric' system.

Road signs wiil be in Kilometers and not 'miles'.  Example: you take a road trip from Toronto to
Niagara Falls ... the road sign says - Niagars Falls 130 k (thats about 80 mies)
You say What is this 130 k  (k - means kilometers)

You buy gas by the 'liter' - not by the gallon.

Phone:   If you phone a business, company or corputation in eastern Canada (Quebec mainly) using
the toll free number or even their real number - the first recording is in French and the second
recording is in English - then the operator says - Press 1 for French and 2 for English.

If you are in western Canada (west of Ontario) Recodings are in English first and French second -  Press 1 for
    English and 2 for French.

Buying grocies willl be a real hoot for you --- bring a calculator ... surprise
Meat (beef, pork, chicken , fish etc) is sold by the kilogram --- not the pound.
EX: hamburger - one kilogram equals 2.2 lbs.
Ex: small canned items (salmon, tuna etc) are sold by 'grams' not ounces.
One can of Campbells tomato soup is 284 ml  (miligrams) - 10 ounces.
Canned tomatoes is 796 ml  (28 ounces)
Loaf of bread is 570 grams  --- don't worry about baked goods - our loaf of bread looks similar to yours.

Keep all your pennies ---- Canada doesn't use penies anymore. Our Royal Canadian mint stopped making new pennies in May 2012.
When you buy something - it's all rounded off.
Ex: If you purchase something that is $4.93 - you pay $4.95.
If your purchase is $4.92 - you pay $4.90.
In the end it all evens out.  I think.

Don't worry about money.  Dollars are dollars and we have the same change as you - nickle, dime, quarter.
We don't use one dollar and two dollar bills anymore.
We have coins for the one and two dollar bills.
Our one dollar coin is called a 'loonie' - because theres a picture of a loon (bird)on this gold colored coin and the two dollar coin is called a 'toonie',and it has a picture of a polar bear.
What?  some people must have stayed awake all night for a week because they could not cme up with an animals name that started with a 't'.
Well, just guessing that 'two dollars'  means toonie.

Then about the weather - you will to learn about 'Celsius' temperature vs 'Fahrenheit'.
I grew up with Fahrenheit and am now completely only know Celsius.

    Welcome to Canada.
We really are friendly and USA and Canada have the longest undefended border in the world.  Our countries trust each other and we are the envy of the rest of the world.

    Good luck to all.

    Ann
