Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) The families of 15 civilians killed by mistake in an Iraqi airstrike on Kirkuk last October have brought a lawsuit against Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, his defense minister and the air force command.
Haider Daqouqi, an activist and a relative of some of the victims, was quoted by Alrassid news website as pointoing out that an investigation panel formed by the Iraqi parliament had confirmed that Iraqi air forces were behind the catastrophe.
The victims were attending a ٍShia mourning congregation in Daqouq, south of Kirkuk.
Ali Mohamed Naqi, an Iraqi lawyer, told the website that 43 lawyers from the province have volunteered to champion the case.
Iraqi and US-led air forces have been conducting airstrikes targeting the last few Islamic State strongholds in the country as part of a campaign to retake Iraqi regions occupied by the group in 2014.
The legal action comes a few days after fighter jets, believed to be Iraqi, killed at least 130 civilians by mistake in the town of al-Qaem, Anbar province. The incident sparked wide-scale condemnation in Iraq, and generals at the Iraqi military and the US-led coalition fighting ISIS in Iraq denied responsibility for the airstrike.
