Banks Qatar lost 7.6 percent of its foreign deposits

Qatar's central bank said on Thursday that foreign customer deposits in Qatari banks fell in June after Gulf countries cut diplomatic and transport links with Doha.

According to data, foreign customer deposits in Qatari banks, mostly foreign currency deposits, fell to Rls 170.6 billion ($ 46.9 billion) in June from Rls 184.6 billion in May.

The decline of 14 billion riyals is equivalent to 7.6 percent of foreign deposits in Qatari banks and 1.8 percent of total deposits.

The data also showed that the advances of Qatari banks from foreign banks shrank to 46.6 billion riyals from 51.8 billion riyals.

These numbers appear to be consistent with a statement by central bank governor Sheikh Abdullah bin Saud al-Thani on July 10 that less than $ 6 billion had come out of Qatar last month.

The data show that Qatari banks have reduced external lending to deal with the crisis. Qatari banks' claims to overseas banks have dropped to 93.8 billion riyals from 102.2 billion riyals.
