Trump is "angry" with the Afghanistan war and proposes to sack the US commander

    Release Date: 2017/8/3

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump has doubts about the war in Afghanistan, delaying the completion of the new US strategy in South Asia and raising doubts about the proposed removal of the US commander in the region, US officials said on Wednesday.
At a meeting on July 19 at the White House, Trump asked his top aides for national security for more information on what was needed to reach what one official described as the "final stage" in a country where the United States spent 16 years fighting the Taliban without any end in sight.
There was intense tension during the meeting when Trump said Secretary of Defense James Matisse and Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Danford had to consider removing General John Nicholson, commander of US forces in Afghanistan, because he did not win the war.
"We do not win," said Trump, who asked not to be named.
Moreover, when the meeting ended, Trump's chief strategist Steve Bannon went on to describe what an official described as a "shouting match" with White House national security adviser HR McMaster on the direction of US policy.
Some officials left the meeting "astounded" by the president's complaints that the military was allowing the US to lose the war.
Officials said Matisse, McMaster and other top aides were gathering their answers to Trump's questions in a way they were trying to persuade him to agree to the strategy.
The White House declined to comment on the accounts of the meeting.
Trump has long complained about long-term US involvement in foreign wars and has expressed his unwillingness to deploy military forces without a specific plan on how long and how long it will take.

US president demands removal of US commander in Afghanistan

    08:43 - 03/08/2017

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump is increasingly disappointed with his Afghan advisers and has called for the resignation of the top US commander in the country, NBC reported .

The channel quoted senior US administration officials as saying that Trump made more than once, during a White House meeting on July 19, his defense secretary, James Matisse, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Joseph Danford, Nicholson as commander of US forces and NATO in Afghanistan because of the lack of any progress in this country.

The officials, who were not identified, said Trump complained during the two-hour meeting of Washington's allies within NATO, particularly with regard to the US proportion of the distribution of Afghan natural resources. He compared the participants to a highly paid consultant and gave bad advice to his A restaurant in New York City.

The sources added that Trump had strongly criticized his military advisers, stressing that the United States was losing its positions in the war, and expressed disappointment with Defense Secretary Matisse personally.

Trump stressed that despite the allocation of additional military resources months ago, the United States continues to lose its positions in Afghanistan with the spread of the Taliban's control, but Matisse replied that the reason for these losses is the absence of a required strategy on Afghanistan in Washington .

The officials said Trump refused to hold a personal meeting with General Nicholson, and left the meeting without taking any decision on the US strategy in Afghanistan.

NBC quoted a Defense Department official as saying discussions were underway on Nicholson's fate, while Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White told the channel Defense Secretary Mattiece trusted Nicholson with full confidence.

Nicholson admitted during a US Senate hearing in February that the war in Afghanistan had reached an impasse, adding that he needed "several thousand" additional troops to launch a joint attack that could lead to a break.
