Trump reveals his strategy on Afghanistan

    Follow up - Mawazine News
US President Donald Trump is expected to present his strategy of sending additional troops to Afghanistan, prolonging the longest war in US history.
The speech, scheduled for Tuesday at 1: 00 GMT, will be broadcast on US television stations.
Trump said he "reached the decision after reviewing the options for war with the national security team at Camp David."
Trump has already called for full withdrawal from Afghanistan, and announced a strategic review as soon as he takes office in January.
Trump will deliver his address from the Fort Myer base near the Arlington National Cemetery where more than 2,200 US soldiers have been killed while serving in Afghanistan for 16 years.
In his speech, Trump is expected to outline a tougher US policy to combat terrorism in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Earlier this year, Trump ordered US Defense Secretary Jim Matisse to set troop levels in Afghanistan.
General John Nicholson, commander of US forces in Afghanistan, has asked for 4,000 additional US troops.
"We are with you and we will stay with you," Nicholson told Afghan forces at a training base southeast of Kabul.
Military combat operations against the Taliban officially ended in 2014, but the Special Forces continued to support Afghan forces.
More than 8,000 troops are currently deployed in Afghanistan.
Trump backed the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan under former US President George W. Bush in 2001 after the September attacks.
