US leaks: The UAE is seeking to acquire a nuclear weapon

The Diplomatic website of The Diplomat on Wednesday revealed US leaks that the UAE has violated international sanctions against North Korea, while noting that secret links between the two sides could reach Abu Dhabi's bid to buy nuclear weapons from Pyongyang.

The UAE Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that North Korea had launched intercontinental ballistic missiles that landed in Japan's special economic zone.

In its statement, the UAE described North Korea's actions as "a real threat to international security and stability," stressing the importance of "supporting international law as a bulwark against nuclear proliferation."

The Australian Diplomatic website The Diplomat said that despite this harsh anti-Pyongyang speech from Abu Dhabi, there are US leaks that the UAE has violated the international sanctions imposed on North Korea by buying weapons from this pariah state. "The secret links between the two sides may reach Abu Dhabi's pursuit of nuclear weapons from Pyongyang."

The site revealed the US State Department's leaked memo that the UAE bought weapons worth 100 million dollars from North Korea in June 2015 to support the military intervention led by Saudi Arabia in Yemen.

The UAE's "secret" arms purchases from Pyongyang can be explained by Abu Dhabi's belief that North Korea is a potential supplier of missiles and the UAE's desire to prevent North Korea from selling advanced military technology to Iran and the Houthis in Yemen.

Although many US defense analysts view the UAE as Washington's most trusted ally in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), tensions have risen between Abu Dhabi and Washington as a result of the Obama administration's nuclear deal in July 2015, formally known as the Comprehensive Action Plan Common (JSBO).

The UAE was one of the most opposed to Obama's attempts to normalize relations with Iran, more than Saudi Arabia, and 91% of UAE nationals surveyed in 2015 expressed their opposition to the joint work program.

Since many UAE policy makers believe that Iran will back down from its comprehensive plan of action and move relentlessly towards becoming a nuclear power, senior UAE officials, such as the United Arab Emirates ambassador to the United States, Yusuf Al Otaiba, Their interest in developing an Emirati nuclear deterrent.

Although US officials do not want the UAE to buy nuclear weapons, Abu Dhabi has maintained trade ties with anti-Western countries so that it can respond quickly to a major Iranian violation of the CPA agreement.

The site added that North Korea is a potential supplier of nuclear materials to the United Arab Emirates.

The military ties between the UAE and Pyongyang date back to 1989, when Abu Dhabi bought Scud-B missiles from North Korea.
