Badra loses 75% of date production due to thirst and mysterious fires

 Wasit / Jabbar in Jay

Local officials and a number of owners of palm groves in the province of Badra in Wasit province that a significant decline in the production of dates in the judiciary has happened, which is one of the areas known for their unique orchards of Iraqi dates, and called on the government to develop national programs to revive palm groves and re-life of the Iraqi palm , Farmers and owners of orchards revealed that the unknown fires, which affected large areas of palm groves and water scarcity, were a major reason for the decline of production, which exceeded 75 percent.

"The district of Badrah in Wasit province is one of the most important areas in which palm and fruit orchards are rich, and these orchards were unique and rare items of Iraqi dates," said Qaimmakam Badrah Ja'far Abdul Jabbar Mohammed in an interview with Al-Mada. He added: "This great decline in production has become clear and tangible for all. After Badra was a city exporting Iraqi unique dates such as Al-Burahi, Maktoom, Qataitaz, Jamal Al-Din, Amran, Al-Rabban and other types of products, Or that their owners changed their races to other occupations because of the deterioration of production. "

Karim said in an interview with Al-Mada that "the issue of the decline of dates in the city of Badra has become apparent after the decline was a large percentage is incredible as a result of government negligence and other factors and the reasons that helped, such as the fires that affected large areas of these orchards in And the lack of water due to the cessation of water from the Kallal river coming from
Iranian territory . "  Farmer Hamad al-Shallal, one of the owners of orchards in Badra district, said that the dates of Badra were a distinctive mark for Iraqi dates not only in Wassit, but also in all governorates due to the existence of different types of Iraqi dates, which are famous for the province. "

Al-Shallal said in an interview with Al-Mada that "date production declined significantly in Wasit province. This decline was about 75 percent due to several factors, including weak government support and lack of care for gardeners, And repeatedly without detection of the perpetrators so far. " "The province of Wasit is characterized by the existence of unique varieties of Iraqi dates, such as Ali al-Abd and Ali Dula and Lkitonh and other rare items such as Maktoum Badra and Al-Barhi and Jamal al-Din, which has become difficult to maintain as a result of government negligence and the lack of support to the owners of orchards."

Shaker emphasizes that "the concerned authorities in the province of Wasit and the Ministry of Agriculture required to develop a mechanism to resolve all the problems and obstacles facing the owners of orchards and must prepare a working paper submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture with the aim of overcoming the obstacles in front of them and solve the problems facing the owners of orchards, especially the subject of control and water scarcity, Badra. " "The city of Badra, which is located near the Iraqi-Iranian border, was an important source of support for the national economy through its orchards, which were known for its abundant production, whether dates or fruit. , Pointing out that "production has decreased significantly since the seventies of the last century and until now."

He added that "the reasons for the decline in production are many, foremost water scarcity of water in the river Kalal (a river coming from Iranian territory and the only source to water the orchards of Badra and Jassan and Zerbatia) and the war of the eighties of the last century had the most impact in the destruction of large areas of palm groves below There should be serious remedies for the subject. " "He had to leave his land, like dozens of farmers who left their homes after the water shortage worsened. He did not practice agriculture or reap the fruits of his orchard for five years because of the death of palm trees and the futility of production because imports are not paying the expenses due to the death of large numbers of fruit trees, To the extinction of unique varieties of dates for the same reason, and there is none of these varieties only the number of fingers of one hand from the palm after the production in the past covers the markets of Wasit province and other provinces.

The province of Wasit contains large areas of palm groves and fruits up to about 23 thousand acres and are distributed in several areas in the province, the most important in the district of Essaouira and its suburbs and in the province of Azizia in addition to the orchards of Badra and Nu'maniyah and the district, and these orchards are famous for fruit trees and palm trees, Dates varieties in the province of 150 varieties, including rare varieties. Iraq has for many decades been the first place in date production and maintained the world number one position in terms of palm trees and annual production. After having 38% of the total palm trees in the world, today it has reached the sixth place in production and after it had about 31 million palm trees Now has less than half of the previous number because of the wars that destroyed thousands of acres of orchards in addition to the incidence of various diseases, including Hamra and Dupas.
