The Catalonia police prosecutor ordered the police to confiscate ballot boxes and ballot papers, or any material that could be used in the banned Catalonia referendum, called by separatists in the Spanish province.
Separatists in Catalonia insist on moving ahead with the planned referendum, despite the government's refusal in Madrid and the Constitutional Court's rejection of the referendum.
The relationship between Catalonia and the Spanish government is growing more and more dramatically as the referendum approaches.
On Tuesday, the leaders of the local and national police and the regional police run by the Catalan Government are summoned to the Attorney General's Office in Catalonia.
Police commanders have been ordered to act "to avoid irregularities", prosecutors said in a statement after the meeting.
Under Spanish law, prosecutors have the power to give orders to the judicial police to investigate irregularities.
"Police officers ... will immediately implement the necessary measures to confiscate material intended to prepare or hold an illegal referendum," the statement said.
In particular, the prosecution ordered the police to confiscate items such as "ballot boxes, ballot papers, memos for polling station workers, and election campaign tools."
The Catalonian government called for independence, led by Carles Bigmount, to hold the referendum, despite Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's rejection of it and the Spanish Constitutional Court, which ruled the bill was unconstitutional.
The public prosecutor filed a formal complaint against Bigdemont and members of his government, accusing them of "civil disobedience, misuse of power and embezzlement of public funds." The latest charge carries an eight-year sentence.
