    Alsumaria News / Baghdad
called on the United Nations representatives in Syria on Tuesday for an immediate cessation of hostilities throughout Syria for at least a month, to allow the delivery of aid and the evacuation of the sick and injured.

A statement by the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and representatives of UN organizations operating in Syria described the situation in the country as "difficult".

"The United Nations team in Syria warns against the dire consequences of the worsening humanitarian crisis in several parts of the country," the statement said.

This comes at a time when Washington accuses the Syrian army forces of several chemical attacks with chlorine gas or sarin during the recent period, which Damascus denied and described as "lies."

A US official also warned earlier that Washington was not ruling out military strikes in Syria as a result of those accusations.

On 22 January, 21 civilians, including children, were injured by suffocating and breathing distress after government forces shelled the besieged city of Douma, east of Damascus. Medical sources and the Syrian Observatory were likely to have caused poison gas.
