The Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, has issued a new law requiring a number of reforms in the Qatari army service to ensure a one-year extension instead of three or four months and optional recruitment of female candidates.
The law, which bears the number 5 for the year 2018 and issued on Wednesday, has been implemented and implemented from the day following the date of its publication in the Official Gazette.
The law includes an increase in the length of national service to "one year for those 18 years of age who have obtained a baccalaureate or equivalent, whichever is earlier," as well as "graduates" of universities, colleges, higher institutes or sub-university or equivalent institutes who have attended Before the entry into force of this law, "after a period ranging from 3 to 4 months in the previous law.
The Act included the addition of a new article that would allow for voluntary recruitment of women, stipulating that "the enrollment of females in national service at the age of 18 shall be optional."
The new law also included the establishment of the so-called National Service Academy, which implements its provisions.
The law states that "every male Qatari who has attained 18 years of age or has a high school diploma or equivalent, whichever is earlier, and does not exceed 35 years of age," shall be assigned to the working service, the same period of recruitment as in the previous law.
The law also punishes the penalties of "every employee who fails without excuse to join the service until the age of commissioning" to "imprisonment for a period not less than one month and not exceeding three years, and a fine of not less than 50 thousand riyals (13.7 thousand dollars) and not more than 300 (SR 82.4 thousand) or one of these two penalties. "
The penalty of the same violation in the previous law was "imprisonment for a period not exceeding one year, and a fine not exceeding SR 50,000, or one of these two penalties."
In April 2014, Qatar began, for the first time, applying compulsory recruitment, after it was "optional".
The amendments to the National Service Law at a time when the Gulf region is an internal crisis erupted against the backdrop of the declaration of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt on 5 June 2017, cut off diplomatic relations with Qatar and the air traffic, sea and land with them.
