The Australian government has suggested that hundreds of migrants and asylum seekers remain in detention centers in the Pacific Ocean, confirming that they are not being accepted permanently in Australia.
"Hundreds of asylum seekers in Pacific detention centers will probably stay there indefinitely, as no other country wants to receive them," said Australian Interior Minister Peter Dutton.
"Asylum seekers have been informed that they will not be permanently resettled in Australia.
Under Australia's strict immigration policy, the authorities send refugees intercepted at sea to three centers in Papua New Guinea and a fourth in the South Pacific island of Nauru to consider their applications.
Earlier, the United Nations warned of what it called the "shocking effects" of long-term detention of asylum seekers in Australian detention centers on remote islands, warning that their situation was "appalling".
