    Iraq news

The power crunch has returned to most of Iraq's central and southern cities, after stabilizing over the past five months.

Suddenly, with the end of the first week of Ramadan, the hours of interruption exceeded 15 hours a day, sparking public anger and political uncertainty about the reason for the deterioration of service, especially since one of the most funding ministries in Iraq is the one specialized in electricity.

Baghdad and other cities, such as Dhi Qar, Maysan, Babil and Basra, have been strongly affected because they are the warmest in terms of weather compared to other cities in the north of the country.

Originally, for more than 14 years, Iraqis have suffered an electricity crisis that is one of the most significant crises in the country since 2003, and it has not been able to overcome it, despite spending about $ 41 billion in this sector, according to official reports.

The core of the sector's problem is that it is among the most corrupt sectors, according to the files revealed by Iraqi politicians.

The Ministry of Electricity is talking about a fault in the gas line imported from Iran, but has been repaired. "The interruption in the cities of Iraq was not a complete interruption, but it happened for a few hours because of a problem in the pipeline, and it was brought back to normal," said spokesman Mohammad Fathi.

He continued: "There were maintenance works on the Iranian gas line, after being subjected to breakdowns and problems .. It feeds Baghdad fully and the stations of Jerusalem, Sadr, Mansuriyah and others."

Government sources pointed out that Iran stopped the incoming line to Iraq because of the debts of the ministry to the Iranian side, and explained that the electricity problems caused by the non-payment of the wages of the Iranian line, which caused the interruption of the line amidst difficult climatic conditions and high temperatures, and stopped most drinking water complexes, workshops and factories, Serious harm to the interests of citizens.

Member of the Finance Committee of the Iraqi Parliament Magda Tamimi, showing that the current generation rate of up to 10 thousand and 900 MW, and that the country needs to generate 10 thousand additional megawatts to meet the energy needs. She pointed to the existence of projects lagging and completed but not operational, for reasons of mismanagement and corruption in investment contracts and waste of energy and poor coordination between the ministries of electricity and oil.

The representative of the province of Maysan (south), in the Iraqi parliament, Mohamed Chihod, considered that the new government must be competent services, not politics. He said that "the problem of services, mainly electricity, represents real suffering," noting that "successive governments since 2003, provided funds almost described as imaginary to the Ministry of Electricity, but the ministry did not provide anything."

In an interview, he added that "the questioning of the Minister of Electricity Qasim al-Fahdawi in parliament did not lead to a result. We did not know the imbalance in the ministry and the reasons for the deterioration of the energy situation in the country because of the political corruption and protection that the minister received from politicians in the parliament. This is the case of the country. Whenever we want to hold a corrupt person accountable, a group that defends the corrupt and does not take into account the rights of citizens will emerge. "

He pointed out that "the policy adopted wrong, which is related to the import of electric power and gas allocated to power plants, because Iraq has all the good things that are supposed to be exploited and do."

Parliamentarian Salim Shawqi accused local governments in the cities of southern Iraq of not paying attention to the problem of electricity, and the absence of follow-up lines of transport and what is happening in the failures. "Mismanagement is the most prominent feature of local governments in the southern cities," he said.

He pointed out that "the Iraqi federal government is also involved in the problems of electricity, it is still importing energy and special lines used in local power plants, despite the knowledge that the import is financially expensive ... We have been aspiring over the past years to establish new and developed plants to produce electricity to meet the local need and sell Surplus to those who need it from Iraq's neighbors. "

In Baghdad, Baghdad activists threatened to organize a popular sit-in to demand the improvement of this "eternal problem," as described by the legal and activist Bassam Tamimi, noting that "Baghdad has seen the worst electricity service in months, the rate of availability of the current to 3 hours a day, Millions of citizens fasting in the month of Ramadan, "pointing out that" the Ministry of Electricity disappeared completely when the election season began.
