US President Donald Trump has kept open the possibility of negotiating an agreement on Iran's nuclear program, two days after he escalated my talk with officials of the mullahs' regime.
"We will see what happens, but we are ready to reach a real deal, not the agreement reached by the previous administration, which is a disaster," he said in a speech to veterans of the Missouri foreign battles.
Trump points to the nuclear deal reached by the Obama administration with Tehran in 2015, and Trump withdrew from it in May after repeatedly criticizing it, citing major gaps.
The threat and intimidation began on Sunday after Iranian President Hassan Rowhani Trump warned of continuing what he called "hostile policies of Iran."
Trump was quick to respond to the Tehran regime via Twitter: "To Iranian President Rohani, do not ever try to threaten the United States again, or you will suffer serious obstacles."
He added: "We are no longer a country that complains about your misinterpretations about violence and death." Be careful, "pointing out that Tehran risks" consequences that few have seen in history, "if it threatened the United States.
Pressure on Iran
US officials said Trump's comments came as part of a barrage of speeches as well as publications on social media aimed at pressuring Iran to end its nuclear program, support terrorist groups and destabilize the Middle East.
The campaign, supported by Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton, is aimed at working in concert with the Trump campaign to clamp down on Iran economically by re-imposing severe sanctions on it, 12 current and former officials said.
The campaign has intensified since Trump withdrew from the 2015 agreement signed by seven countries to prevent Iran from making nuclear weapons.
Iran has faced mounting US pressure and possible sanctions since Trump's May decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal.
With public discontent over Iran's faltering economy, currency slide and the prospect of tough new US sanctions, many Iranians hope US steps will accelerate the fall of the regime. The Iranian.
