    Jordan's recent economic moves in a joint forum with Iraq in Baghdad highlighted the promising investment and trade opportunities that would allow the neighbors to get out of their years-long grip.
    The business community is rushing to save the remaining economies of their battered countries because of the turbulent situation in the region, taking the opportunity on the sidelines of the 45th session of the Baghdad International Fair to lay the foundation for a transition to the revival of their historic partnership.
    The forum comes a few days after the visit of Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to Baghdad to discuss prospects of expanding cooperation in the economic, investment and trade fields in the framework of the strategic partnership with Iraq.
    The Iraqi Minister of Trade, Mohammed Hashim Al-Ani, stressed during the opening of the forum the importance of continuity of communication at the level of the private sector so as to increase the level of economic cooperation and remove obstacles to trade between the two, and to encourage businessmen to establish investment projects in both countries.
    "The Iraqi government is ready to overcome all obstacles facing Jordanian businessmen in order to carry out their work and stimulate exchange and cooperation in all fields," Al Ani said.
    The officials in Jordan are convinced that their country is one of the most important economic partners of Iraq and therefore it is necessary to work at maximum capacity in order to increase the volume of bilateral trade between the two countries and raise investment rates.
    "The doors of Jordan are open to Iraqi businessmen, and they are given opportunities to practice business, industry and investment, in order to develop the role of the pure sector," the Jordanian official news agency quoted Jordanian Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Tariq al-Hammouri as saying.
    Iraq is at a promising stage of growth, and therefore there is a need to build a new strategic partnership based on common interests. The meeting focused on the facilitation of road transport through the Trebil port, the activation of the Jordanian-Iraqi agreement and the free trade agreement with the Arab countries, under which customs duties will be abolished.
    The newly opened Al Karama-Trebil crossing is a key artery for the revitalization of the economic and trade movement, through which countries seek to invest, develop and facilitate trade and facilitate both-way traffic.
    At the same time, Jordanian goods bound for Iraq are being unloaded at the border and reloaded in trucks carrying Iraqi plates, and vice versa.
    Traders and investors in both countries believe that canceling the procedure will reduce transportation costs and reduce damage and loss of goods when downloaded and loaded, especially as the process is done in traditional ways that sometimes cause the corruption of some goods.
    Less than a year after the reopening of the crossing, truck traffic remains much lower than it used to be when more than 800 trucks from Jordan were crossing into Iraq daily. It is estimated that the volume of trade exchange between the two countries amounted to about 1.4 billion dollars annually under the oil-for-food program.
    Economists believe it is too early to talk about the recovery of the sector. Some truckers are engaged in the swap and others are seeking to resume direct access to Iraqi territory.
    Jordanian investors seek a share of the reconstruction program in Iraqi cities, which have been hit hard by the war in recent years against terrorist groups.
    "We need to take practical steps to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries. First of all, work on revoking the visas will encourage businessmen, citizens of Jordan and Iraq to move with ease and ease," said Jordanian Contractors' Chairman Ahmed Yaqoub.
    The President of the Federation of the Iraqi Chamber of Commerce, Jaafar al-Hamdani, the importance of accelerating the establishment of a joint industrial city on the border between the two countries, thereby contributing to the strengthening of economic cooperation and stimulate new investments and job opportunities.
